Or if rodents get in an chew on the belts...I think there have been a few posts regarding that in the last 3-6 months.

That area should've been sealed up, how did a rodent get in there? Unless someone replaced it and forgot to put everything back. This site is adamant about replacing the belt every 90K miles, i'd go 200K miles before replacing mine if it was factory. If someone replaced it, i'd go back in there and double check their work and make sure right parts were used and everything is torqued up to spec.

If I remember correctly they chewed through the plastic covers.

In the case that I remember seeing, the little triangle cover piece in the middle was forgotten and gave them an entry point. It is a seemingly useless piece that's easy to forget laying on your garage floor until you notice it halfway through putting things back together, and then you have to weigh whether its worthwhile to take s*** back apart to get the stupid little triangle back into place.

Ah, bad job. You think the sensei over at the Tahara plant would've forgot to put that rodent trap door back?

I know it sucks that this happened, but the fact that you can tow it to OTRAMM is huge. It will be done right.

I have a 98 land cruiser coming into my shop soon for TB/WP replacement, original owner with almost 400K miles, he said he never changed it
Look at all the money that was not spent on several TB/WP replacements that were not done on that LC. Umhuh.

Thanks to everyone for all your assistance. Got vehicle transported back to sc and made it back home.
just wanted to provide update: timing belt/water pump replaced with parts I already had at home. engine is in fact running again with a slight knock/stutter at low rpm which very likely is slight valve damage. mechanic said belt tore in 2 spots and that it appeared to be aftermarket. i asked for pics but they didn't have any. thanks again to everyone's insight

'02 is non-VVTI, so "shouldn't" have valve issues, but sucks to hear it's possible.
it's on those slight shudders that you try to convince yourself was there before it happened. we shall see...at this point i will probably just keep her going as long as possible and deal with engine swap down the line...i just hope it happens in my own backyard next time haha

Sigh, another story of belt breaking AFTER it's been changed. I'd rock a factory belt to 300K miles all day long, any chump change it, begins a bomb counter.
