Find yourself a V10 TDI Touareg and then you'll get 7700lbs towing capacity + air suspension - a better choice for this kind of load.

So you can drop the engine and rebuild the entire thing while you're in there replacing the alternator? I'd argue too short of a wheelbase as well. I probably wouldn't get a newer diesel Super Duty, I'd save the money and get a gasser with the big V8.

Nice part about VAG vehicles is the motors are designed to come out on the subframe. They're a nightmare to work on if you don't have the right tools, but the V10 comes out in under 4 hours with the SST:

@lx470mg , I am relieved that you're leaning towards using a better tool for the job. While it's good to get your AHC dialed in, no add-on is going to help you navigate the legality of exceeding GVMR.

Plenty of comments already, but I'd rather have a longer wheelbase than more of just about anything else when towing a big/heavy trailer. With a short wheelbase the trailer ends up controlling the truck more than the truck controlling the trailer, which is manageable for a few miles to the local boat launch, but not for any sort of real trip.

Oh, I'm well aware. I just don't think a V10 Touareg is a very user friendly option as a tow vehicle. The issue is that you need to go through all that for a lot of maintenance normally considered routine. Imagine installing that new alternator and finding out it was bad out of the box upon start-up. Yikes.

I tow a little bit with mine. My camping trailer ls around 2500 lbs loaded and the Cruiser is unhappy going uphill (watching those trans temps was nerve wracking). And on cross country drives you can expect your normally short range/bad gas mileage to get significantly worse.

I have heavy rear springs and airbags because I also tow my tractor/24 ft trailer which all in is around 5000 lbs. Even with trailer brakes and a brake controller I have to drive slowly and with conscious mechanical sympathy. And I live in a flat state.

There is no way I would push it even to 6500lbs. No Way. Destroying the Cruiser aside, it would be unsafe IMO.
