So did you ever get ahold of Torfab and inquire about their airbox, or just got frustrated and went the PDI route?

So did you ever get ahold of Torfab and inquire about their airbox, or just got frustrated and went the PDI route?

I called them a total of 4 or 5 times about their airbox. Initially, Tor seemed somewhat interested. He mentioned that, at the moment, they only built boxes specifically to the builds that they were working on. But, if I was willing to be a guinea pig, I could get a box, without any mountings. I could mount my own and give him data to make a box around a 1HDT swap. I was interested but everytime I called back, guys at the shop said they haven't gotten to it and it seemed like they lost interest. So, at this point, I wanted to eliminate airbox restriction as a possible contributor to shortened turbo life. Plus, PDI works closely with Gturbo, so I figured the parts might play well together. That's the hope, anyway.

How many miles were on your turbo when it died? Any idea?

I put 50,000 miles on it. How many were on it before I got it? I have no idea.

I'm getting the Cruiser towed over to a mechanic buddy's house today. He'll start the old turbo removal and also inspect the intake path. This weekend, I'll go over there and help with the new turbo install. (assuming the parts arrive on time)

Speaking of which, still no shipping confirmation from Gturbo...:(

That's what I was thinking.

20k miles a year is a lot. Nearly double what I'd do, and Australia is a biiiiiiiig place 🤣

I end up driving it to work most days. I really should probably drive something else... but I just like driving it too much!

Looky here!

It's going to be a busy day tomorrow.

This is a bad picture. But, the PDI airbox has some bad interference with the Slee battery box. To get it to fit, we are going to have to cut away the entire folded over lip on the top of the Slee battery box. This will remove the structural strength of the battery box, which won't make for a long term solution. So, short term, we are going to hack it to get me to Vermont Overland. Long term, my buddy is going to fabricate me a new box that will fit with the PDI and mount my ARB compressor, like the Slee box does.

OEM battery box should fit with PDI airbox, if you're able to locate the bits in time and at a price you're happy with.

It's in! Man, the new turbo is so much quieter than the old one. I'll grab some pics and a video tomorrow. 25 miles on it so far and my impression is that the new turbo spools faster and holds boost through the entire rpm range rather than tapering off up top. Everything seems to be less stressed by the boost, if that makes sense. Vermont Overland Rally is looking promising at this point!
