Mark @65swb45 got back to me today with the diagnosis - looks like a combination of dingbat prior ownership, bad rebuild on the part of the current owner, and sheer ignorance in general overall.

The main culprit:

56132ECC-5002-4832-AF0C-FBB2B8CE8469.jpeg

Notice that there’s a JET ON THE END OF IT. There wasn’t one in the carb that was on the rig, so I had no idea that it was meant to have a jet on it. And, since the prior owner had disabled the power jet and high idle, it never opened (and wasn’t a problem - from a dumping-unmetered-gas-into-the-engine perspective). Once I got the vacuum working from the power valve, and it opened, it ended up just tossing fuel into the engine causing it to run rich. Well there you go.

Secondary smoking gun:

This spring was missing from the secondary diaphragm, so when it opened, it didn’t have the help to return closed. I’m owning that one since I replaced the diaphragm when I did my “rebuild”. However the paper clip test showed that it didn’t move, which could have been due to the fact that the bolt with the hole in the middle was barely finger-tight (I’m owning that one as well, though I could have sworn it was nice and tight) and causing a vacuum leak. I’m sure that I’ll need to redo lean drop once this is back on the truck.

I’m sure there’s other stuff I messed up that I’ve forgotten, but these were the big ones.

I’ve bagged up the parts and will drop them off with Mark in the morning, so he can finish this out. I never would have known anything about that jet if he hadn’t caught it, and I’m very grateful to have that second carb so I can raid it for parts. Hoping this is the right size jet… will do some research on that next.

Been a little while - holidays and 2002 stuff. Got the carb back from Mark @65swb45 and installed over the holiday break, and rig is running better than ever - money well spent! I haven't had a chance to get it down for smog, but think that will happen next week. Drove it all over the neighborhood this afternoon and it was great.

Decided to rehab my original roll bar today. Was tired of looking at it sitting sad on the side of the house and it came out decent enough, so will pull the really nice one I have in there now (too nice for the truck to be honest!) and put the original one back in the truck.

So - if anyone's looking for a really good OEM roll bar, hit me up.

There is a guy in the sale section from San Bernardino that was looking for an OEM roll bar. @Kringle

Thank you! I posted to his thread as well!

This one is really nice, I had it shipped here via Greyhound over the summer. Seller @hyhpe did an awesome job packing it up to ship.

Afternoon project - re-seal and clean up the steering box. I’ve had the rag joint, seals, and gasket kicking around my workbench since the summer, but haven’t had time to get it done. I drove all over the neighborhood this morning, trying to find a smog joint that was open. My usual guy had his power knocked out by the wind up here, and another guy down the street said his smog machine was busted. Awesome.

In the middle of things. Lots of swarfy, nasty gear oil that had to be cleaned out. Looked like sludge or sand at the bottom. Gross.

Not taking this apart, lol.

More. It’s not perfectly clean but that’s fine.

Good call on not taking the steering worm apart, unlike me. I only realized what I got myself into after.

Finally took an open morning for smog… it passed on the first try, with flying colors! A huge THANK YOU to Mark @65swb45 for rebuilding the carb, Matt @ToyotaMatt for cryogenically preserved VSVs and other important 77 CA-only parts, and this forum for your support, knowledge, and guidance! EDIT - forgot to also thank @4Cruisers for the one year, CA-only distributor vacuum advance and retard, and the distributor points plate BB rebuild kit!

Now I have to figure out what to work on next…!

installed and all it
s NIPPONDENSO NOS OEM GLORY !

there is a HUGE lack of concrete TECH on what you approached me about and for many months ago

it would be a great asset to all CCA , CO , and AZ smog compliant Owner Operators !

Thanks

As requested, sort of hard to see as it's under the air filter. But she's there, all installed and doing her job:

Always glad to hear/see this. 😊

You forgot something:

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Not an exhaustive list, or in order, but here we go:

Exhaust
Shocks and springs
Door seals so the XYL :princess: can have her garage space back
Radio / speakers
Dome light
Seat belts
Sun visors
Paint for rear panels and roof, all new seals on roof and windows
Wheels / tires
Pushrod cover seal
Rear main seal or oil pan seal repair (hard to tell which it is - may also be the cam plug?)
Upper dash pad
Knuckle rebuild and bearings
Full brake job

This all seems totally doable. Paint is way down that list as it's probably the most expensive item on here. Exhaust is high up as I'm getting some backfiring on shutoff and don't see any cracks in the exhaust manifold. The current exhaust is just a length of pipe with what looks like was maybe a glass pack at some point. Will try to do some closer searching for an exhaust leak over the weekend.

Shocks and springs are up there for safety along with brakes and seat belt refurbishment. Wheels and tires are important, the 33s are old but in good enough condition for tootling around town for now. Rear main or oil pan seal is more a nuisance than anything, plus may go hand in hand with a trans rebuild and clutch job (more $$$). I have parts from the PO for the knuckle rebuild, though they date to 2008 and may be junk. Brakes work fine as is, but are old and would like to rebuild / replace cylinders, calipers, pads, drums, discs, etc.

Shocks on order - going with some Ranchos swapping like for like, RS5000s. I don‘t know if these are particularly great, but anything will be an improvement over the worn out stuff on there now. Plus gives me a minute to work on other issues while improving driveability.

Also need to chase down a fast idle issue. Revs a bit higher than it should at stop lights, going to start by assuming it’s a linkage issue as it goes away when I pull up the gas pedal. I think my return spring is hosed. As @65swb45 has said before… Occam’s Razor.

Shocks installed, working out great. Now on to some minor things - was able to get the seat belt buzzer in the truck installed and working, along with replacing some lights and fixing a few grounds and installing a new (used) dome light. Also got some mirror glaze #7 to feed the very dried out paint, will probably need another go-round to make it look good.

Nice TECH. record for the Archives and your doing a very very Swell job too :)

on a side topic you more then anyone may have the Skill-Sets already here ?

can you help me conclude what the LAND CRUISER models USA and CANADA FJ40 and FJ55 fundamental difference or differences are in the 2 UNICORN EWD's ?

- facts i know ....

- 2 very different publication numbers on each ewd .....

-
#'s 98922 & 98889

- at first glance they appear to beb the same FJ40 LARGE FORMAT old skool Dealership's ONLY Service Dept Shop Formans Series they i know existed back then

- how ever i can't find the difference yet ?

- the BIG Puzzle Question in my life time of land Cruiser and Vintage Toyota travels , i was under the concrete impression that 1980 was thge 1st confirmed production year

of the lower portion of each Large FOLD out 4x8 Sheet of PLY WOOD size schematics sheet with the Connectors and Terminal Bays numbering system ?

- i have Every SINGLE SOR reprint and there 1977 does NOT have this in any way ?

- nor do they have TWO independent 1977 Land Cruiser FJ40 / FJ55 EWD diagrams and or Publications Numbers like i have going on here ?

- if im correct and SOR has never Re-Printed These , The the
1977 KEYS to Your Kingdom sit before you and me speaking all things Electrical FSM EWD ....

- and this possibility alone is mind blowing to say the least ,

- i don't want to clog your build thread , we can resume this TECH in PM format if you like , no sweat ..........:)

kindly matt
