Hey all:

I have an 80 series that I drive on occasion. When turning and braking at the same time (or just before/after braking) there's a loud noise coming from the truck. It sounds similar to worn down brake pads, but I've just had the brakes done. Tie rods have also been done recently, and the bushings are fine.

I took the truck into a local shop (non specialist) and they basically said they didn't know what it was, and to get another opinion (thanks guys). The truck has a salvage title, due to causes unknown, but the truck has never seemed to show any problems. This noise is a new issue. Could the salvage title be relevant? If not, any ideas?

Who did the brakes? Id look there if it started right after they were replaced. There is a lot of work that goes into replacing those rotors. Hub, bearing, ect.

Did it do it before the brake job, or just after? Sometimes brakes will make noise if you don't use a little brake lube, sometimes not. Is it just a squealing noise, or does it make a popping sound?

It was before the brake job -- the shop did the brakes, bushings, and tie rods. I assumed that would fix the issue but it did not.

Re: More specifics... All I can say is its like a rubbing noise, something rubbing against metal. It sounds exactly like bad brakepads, but the noise only happens when I turn and brake at the same time.

First thing I would do, is jack the front end up, and rotate the tires by hand and see if anything is rubbing. If not, I would put the whole thing on jackstands, have someone sit in the vehicle while you watch the front end. Have them put it in drive and gently let off the brakes letting the tires slowly rotate. At that point, do whatever you need to replicate the sound. Just be very careful not to let the wheels spin too fast so you don't hit the brakes to hard causing the vehicle to fall of the jackstands. Of course, it doesn't have to be off the ground but 2 inches or so.

Odds are that it's dry birfields in the front hubs. Add a tube of moly grease to each front knuckle and drive it long enough to heat up the hubs (100 miles) and see if the noise goes away. Otherwise, may be time for a front axle rebuild.

Check your front caliper bolts, these can back out and start rubbing on the rim.
Pretty easy to and see by crawling under.

Or somebody put a brake pad in backwards, so the backing plate is eating your rotor. In my defense, I've been watching way too many "Customer States" videos on YT lately...

I do my own brakes on all of our cars because I don't trust anyone else to do it right, and lives are at stake.
