Good news guys! The gears are slowly starting to turn until I finally have the 40 (not that I haven't been turning them all along! Haha!) I'll have some pics of the one I'm getting on Saturday evening. She's not painted right now (she's epoxy primer gray), and the guy I'm getting her from is gonna do some work and upgrades on her for me before I get her. I won't have her for a little while longer but me and my parents are going really soon to meet the guy in person and I'll be able to see the 40 in person and hopefully drive her for a little! I'm so excited! The search is coming to an end soon (man has it been a long one)! Should I go ahead and start a different thread for her or should I wait until I actually have her? I'm thinking of going ahead and starting my thread for her when I have the pics of her on Saturday. I can hardly contain my excitement! Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

I can tell you're excited...and I understand that feeling. Where did you find it?

And yes, when you go see it, get some pics and post them so everyone can see it and point out things that you may have overlooked and give you some questions to ask the current owner. You can't have too much info.

She's in Athens,GA. The guy I'm getting her from worked on Cruisers for a living. He owned over 50 FJ40's at one time and has owned just about every other kind. His wife made him stop doing his cruiser business and sell all of his cruisers and now he's a head mechanic at a dealership. I've talked with him over the phone and over text several times about the 40. It's a 73 and the body's in great shape (rust free). It's got a 4 inch lift, 3 on the floor, and a lot of other stuff. He said he's gonna do disk brake upgrade, power steering/power brakes upgrade, a thorough and complete mechanical check and tuneup, and he's gonna make sure it's solid overall. The only downfall of it is that it's not painted (its epoxy primered and is gray right now) so im gonna do a rattlecan job until i have the money to get a pro one done. He said he bought it for his son as a project but he got old, lost interest, and moved away. He's also got 3 huge buildings of parts and he said he'd load me up with parts for the cruiser to help me get started. He's sending pics of the cruiser on Saturday, and we're figuring out a time that we can go meet him and see the 40 in person really soon. Of all the people that I've talked to so far, he has known the most of anyone. He's a really great guy and he's giving me a really good deal and has helped me out tremendously with getting my first car. I'll make sure to take lots of pics when we go in person (I'll try to get a video of it too). It's gonna be a little while longer before I get to bring her home because she's gonna have to have the work/upgrades done. But I'll let you guys know and I'll start her thread once he sends me the pics of her. Thanks and let me know what y'all think.

If it is the same person he used to sell parts full time on craigslist. Went by cruiser ray. I said in the pm i sent you i never spoke with him but actually i did. He was very nice to me and very helpful. In the end i found my parts on mud much cheaper. At the time he was selling parts full time so i guess that did not work out in the long run for him. Just make sure when you look the cruiser over to use your brain not your heart. I am sure he is a good guy. Sounds like you have spoken with him alot already. Good luck and keep us posted.

Will do. We have spoken together a good many times. He is a great guy, he really wants to help me and see me do well with my cruiser and first car. Trust me, I wont over think it or rush into it I've been talking with him about it since the end of July (I'm pretty positive this is the one though). I'll post up the pics he sends me on Saturday and I'll take lots more when we go to meet him in person. I'll keep you guys posted and let me know any advice or info. Thanks

Brysen,

I really hope this deal works out the way you have envisioned it. Personally, I am a tad skeptical. Knowing your $8K or less budget I find it hard to believe that you have found someone who is willing to sell you a running, rust free cruiser AND do a power steering conversion AND a disc brake conversion for you for under $8K. Parts for these two conversions alone can easily top $3K...and another $1K for labor. Please be careful. Enlist others here to assist you. Don't rely on the seller's word as gospel. It never hurts to get a second opinion. There...I've put in my .02. I can sleep easy now.

Please understand that I want this to be a good experience for you. If everything is as you say then you will have done well on this purchase. Good luck!

See if he has a rust free fj60/62 shell. Fjmoses is looking for one.

Got the quote from him for how long the work/upgrades on the 40 are gonna take. It's gonna be 6 months at the most so probably less, until I can bring her home full time, but I'm gonna go see her in person very soon (probably within the next week or two). So I'll definitely have her by march at the latest but ill update when I get the pics tomorrow. Thanks and let me know.

Just see what he has. If anything i can get his info and send fjmoses his way.

As a mother, I gotta ask the blindingly obvious question..which you dont have to answer here but you should consider and discuss..Are you gladly paying him for a 40 you can have in approximately 6 months? If it were my kid, Id be putting the brakes on that kind of deal..Im all for learning lessons the hard way BUT no way Id allow my kid to dump that kind of cash into a vehicle sight unseen and no contract to back up hard earned money.

also, Capitol Cruisers are a great group of guys - they definitely offered up some specimens when I was 40 shopping. Its just a matter of networking..

Alright, that being said, best of luck..I hope this turns out the way you want!

No to the gladly paying for one I can have in 6 months and we're not paying for it sight unseen. We're going to meet him face to face and check it out and talk in person way before any cash changes hands. I would never think to buy sight unseen, there's too many open-ended questions. Would never dream of doing anything like that. It's gonna be like any other car deal. If its what we like and and is a good deal and the right one then we'll buy the vehicle. I'm assuming we're gonna do the deal like a dealership or shop would do and pay him for the work and upgrades when it's completed. And pick it up then. We're going in person very soon and before any cash changes hands. I've talked with him quite often (actually did today). Like I said in an earlier post he used to work on and sell cruisers for a living on his own and he owned over 50 fj40's at one time (I've seen pics). He knows his stuff and isn't trying to bs or scam me. I've been looking for way to long to settle or get a bad deal. I know what it is I'm looking for and I'm careful. My parents are the ones that are gonna have the final say in it (seeing as they're paying for most of the cruiser). I'll make sure to head your advice and thanks for the info. Please keep it coming and don't hesitate to give your 2 cents. Thanks so much. Keep the help and info coming!

Many many people have done just that with the same excuse. I had to say it. I have faith in you, brother!
