Also brysen you mentioned you have never driven one. Get with one of these guys that is close to you for a test drive. You are essentially driving a good looking tractor. I can't remember your budget but it might not be a bad idea to pick up a $1500-2000 dd and a 3k cruiser to work on. Even at $75 a week working part time you will be surprised at what you can accomplish. Heck lets be honest i only get $100 a month for my cruiser.

Around 8k? Dude buy a cheap s10 or a civic to dd then get a 40 for 3-4k. Then use the remaining 2k baselining it and getting it to run. If bought in south carolina have trollhole do it. If in nc have darin work it over. Then enjoy it as long as you can before tearing into it again! Oh also have you noticed still no word from ray? Hint hint........

My Canadian .02 cents worth. I have daily driven a 75 fj40 for many a year. It can be done and it can be fun. Granted I did everything to it when it went south, but it has never ever left me on the side of the road. Mine was not new when I got it either. Been abused by another stupid GI. It has made me pull some hair out in the beginning . But I would never trade the experience for anything. Heck pretty much every time I took it to work my CSM would find me and grab the keys and take it out in the training area. This is what I would do . I would find one with no rot and go from there. Drive train is easy compared to body work price wise in my eyes / world.

That one for 3k is not daily driver status. A daily driver 40, that you want to drive everyday, is gonna cost you. And there will be days when it is down. They all have issues. I would not DD a cruiser. That's a good way to get tired of it quick.

I know it was just one that I had been sent. That one needs too much work. I know it's gonna cost for a dd, but I'm not asking for or expecting a fancy sports car or racing car fresh off the production line. I know I'm gonna have problems out of it and its definitely not gonna be perfect. But that's what I want and I know what to expect. I've fallen in love with cruisers and I've had my mind made up for over a year. As far as dd my 40 idk if y'all get the dd part for me. When I say I'm gonna dd my 40 I mean to school, work, church, and wherever else around town. I'm not gonna be taking cross country trips or anything like that, but if I ever did (which I probably won't) I'd drive something else or by that time I'd have the 40 fixed up and solid enough to do so. So that's where I am on that. Just wanted to clear the air.

Thanks. This is what my plan is. They're solid vehicles and easy to work on and maintain (from what pretty much every mudder has told me). I'll definitely bring the cruiser to you, once I have it because I've heard you're the best around! Thanks again.

A daily driver that is not a 40 is not an insult to your affection..I was intent that Id drive Jane home when purchased..if I had, she wouldve caught fire..the battery was unsecured, the fuel pump hose had rotted out..easy fixes-yes. But its an old vehicle..theyre giving you the sound advice you came here for. Faith in 40s to be your sole means of transportation will not get you to class on time when youve got her up on jacks...I cant tell you how many times a 40 project stalled due to parts delay, or I plain just didnt have the time..thank goodness there are 3 other vehicles I can choose from. Its not good advice to buy some small 4 banger while you work on a learning curve and ensure your ride is safe... its GREAT advice ;)

And I feel like after letting my 12 year old drive jane last week- im gonna have these same discussions with her too..its already starting haha- Brysen, maybe by then you can give HER some advice!

Youre stubborn, good. A 40 aint for the faint hearted!

There's no talking me out of it,sorry haha. Like I said in a post or two ago, I'm not looking for a fancy sports car or racing car that I can go 90 mph in or go cross country in whenever I please. I also know its gonna be a "bumpy" ride haha. They're definitely a little more than a glorified tractor too haha, c'mon now. My mind and heart had been set on a 40 for over a year now and I'm not gonna give up. Also about ray. I've heard from him. He goes to work very early in the morning and doesn't get home till 8 and by that time he's dead tired (which is completely understandable). Its also pitch dark by 8 now so he's unable to get the pics. He can only get the pictures on the weekend when he's off and I'm sure he's got other things also. So that's where I am too. Thanks and let me know.

Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely gonna get one that runs and drives, and is mechanically solid and the body's as rust free as possible (of course life's not perfect and I know it's not gonna be perfect and I'm not expecting it to be) from the start. I understand about their advice too. It's what I came here for but I was just saying. I'm not mad or anything at all. I was just wanting to let y'all know. I need the advice so keep it coming of course! Thanks!

No it's not haha! I'll definitely help her out as much as I can. It's the least I can do since all of y'all have helped me so much already and will in the future too. Hopefully I'll be a "somewhat seasoned veteran" when it comes to 40's and cruisers by the time your daughter can drive. I'm definitely stubborn, but that's a good thing when it comes to cruisers. Right? Haha

I think Gimpey's question about Ray and your answer begs the following question: If his hours are that long and his free time is so limited, what kind of schedule will you be able to hold him to on completing 'your' 40? I'm still rooting for you, though; I just always ask the painful questions. :D

I appreciate it more than you know John. Someone's gotta ask em right? He said it'd take him 6 months at the latest to do all the work and upgrades to the 73 that he has. He also said that he's gonna stop working at the dealership where he works those long hours and he's gonna start back up his cruiser business for himself that he used to do full time and is gonna do it full time again. We're planning on going to meet him and check out what he's got before anything else is done so nothing is final or locked in as of now. So I'm still looking all the time. Let me know and thanks for the much needed advice!

If you go with ray i think you should buy the parts and do the work yourself. I bet the club would throw a mega hamom for you. 6 months is a loooong time to wait!

Ok. Well I know you and pretty much everyone else knows that I'm only 16 and it's gonna be my first car so idk if I can jump right in and start doing major things that are gonna be done to the one ray has if I go that route. I'm not saying I wouldn't want to but I just don't think I'm capable of doing big things like power steering, power brakes, disk brakes, and that kind of stuff as of now (of course I want to be able to do stuff like that). I'm gonna learn to wrench and work on it once I have it. What'd you mean by hamom (sorry hope you don't think I'm stupid). You're right, 6 months is very long but I've been waiting for this long already and I'll continue to wait for the "right one" haha. Thanks and let me know.

Hamom=help a member of the month

I'd definitely like that! Hopefully I can get one of those regardless of which way I go on getting my 40. What do y'all think? Personally I don't think I'll be capable of doing that kind of stuff until later on after I've had my cruiser for awhile. I'm more in the direction of getting one that's solid and mechanically sound already and then tackling the smaller/littler things as I go, and then doing a frame off when I'm older, wiser, and have more money. But I'm open to advice and suggestions of course.

The prices on 40s is going up and will most likely continue to do so. They are simply becoming fewer and farther apart. It's a 79, how well do you really expect it to run? Really. Put an entire new wiring harness in the thing, they are not that expensive and all your wiring issues are GONE if you do it right.

You can not look at an 40 these days, unless it has alredy been built or restored, without looking at post purchase expense. I would ESTIMATE that a good running, dependable 40 will cost you $10K. How you get there is up to you. You can either buy a nice rig already done or you can buy one at $3k and throw $7K at it. THESE ARE JUST ESTIMATES. You are not going to find a complete, dependable 40 for $6K, it might be close but it will need work.

Face it, Land Cruisers are expensive, period.

Thanks! This is really solid advice and I need lots of it! I totally agree that prices are definitely going up due to them being so rare and scarce. I also know that I'm gonna have to put money, time, work, and effort into the 40 and I'm ready to do so and I want to do so. Those estimates are right on point. X2 on cruisers being expensive, but isn't pretty much everything nowadays? But you're right, and I'm gonna keep looking till I find the right one, and I'll make sure to have it thoroughly checked out before anything is done and I'll keep everyone posted. Let me know and keep the advice coming.
