Brysen, I think youll be fine..youve got more common sense than I did at your age.

Thanks. I feel like I will. Plus I've got all of y'all to help me out! That's what's wrong with a lot of people in the world today, they've got no common sense or they have it but just don't use it. Personally I'm an old soul (if you couldn't tell already) haha. I'll make sure I'm careful though and I'll post up the pics he sends me tomorrow so y'all can tell me what you think. Thanks and let me know any more advice and info. Thanks again.

5 months in...more patience than I ever had. Looking forward to seeing it.

Thanks haha. More than 5 months actually (not trying to brag or anything). I've been looking since before I joined mud in march. I actually found mud when I was google searching 40's. I can't wait either. There's definitely been times when my patience has been tested and I'm sure it will be a few more times before I actually have the 40. I'll post up some pics of her that the guy's sending me tomorrow, and I'll definitely keep you posted. I can hardly wait too. Thanks and let me know.

You better!

Not the one that mims has but this one is another one that a guy has and just sent me. He's a mud member and a pretty big cruiser guy so I'm pretty confident he's not bs'ing me but you can never know. It's a 79 and it runs/drives. Rust isn't bad, but it needs some body work. Looks good in pics but you can never know until you see in person. He's asking 3k firm without top and 4k with top, what do y'all think? He's gonna send me some more pics but this is all I've got for now. Let me know.

While you obviously need more pics it merits looking into especially if close to you. At that price you could do alot other stuff to it as well. If original powertrain ask for compression #'s.

Gotta drive it and see how it runs. I would think if it is good runner 3k is a fair price. Of course hard to look for rust on a cell phone...

From those pics, id be considering a ton of electrical work ..chasung down shorts is a PITA...you might be different. Under my steering wheel is a jumble of wired hack jobs.
Fenders ...are they newer?
Front DS side over fender - does the body line up?

From the pics, the rear DS quarter panel (over the driver side rear wheel) looks really bad - especially rocker panel..but the pics its hard to say.

Rule of thumb...rust you see is minor to what youll find later.

Metal on post 1974 models had a thinner gauge and rusted "easier"..I think I picked that nugget out of the FAQs :-)

Tell me if Im wrong.

Do you want something you can drive now and work on later?

Its an old girl.

My first cruiser didn't even have a floor it was so rusty. It was wired with lamp wire. This guy has a lot of stuff around I would think he would have something nicer. Those pics don't tell us much of anything other than it has a lot of rust. Not like a hole, there are entire chunks missing. Sometimes those that came from up north have great running gear and they ran them until they couldn't find a place to mount a seat. Not sure that is the case with this one though. Look at it in person. I hate nothing more than RUST...shortly followed by japanese carburetors :)

I mean it's gonna be my daily driver. But it doesn't have to be perfect (I know it's not going to be seeing as they're older and all). I know I'm gonna have problems out of it and all that and I'm ready for all the work that's gonna come with it. That being said I'd like for it to be mechanically solid (start up and run and drive w/o problem or with as little problems as possible) and as little rust as possible (obviously this one has its share of rust as do most 40's). You are right on the older body's being more solid because the steel is thicker. I read that too. That's why the newer 40's rust easier/more. I want it to be able to drive but I also want to work on it too. So I hope that helps some and let me know what you think.
Thanks.

Mine ran pretty ragged initially- changed every fluid (which was more than $200 at autozone- cause, whats the point in buying quarts of gear oil..I buy it in gallons for the 40) Changed all fluids twice in first few months and two more times since...because my baby lives for being pampered haha

I would wait for better pics, maybe the undercarriage, how does the frame /crossmember look etc..wheres that 40 at?

He said Kentucky. Ask for better pics. Preferably in plenty of light and of undercarrage. Ky is a long ride to come back disappointed or guilty because u settled. There is a red one and a camo one here in greenville sc craigslist. Red one looked pretty good. Camo one has rust issues. Rear of it is diamond plate. Remember you can always do a body/tub swap. The camo cruiser has a v8 i think. Been for sale for a long time.

Yeah it's in kentucky so it's a bit of a ways, but I'm willing to travel. I've seen the ones you're talking about on Craigs. The red ones a 73 and the camo one I remember too.
