So the weakness is in the 3rd member, not any difference in the housing? So going ARB in the rear, not a problem, but definitely want to find a factory locker for the front?

And Simon, is your 77 turboed or naturally aspirated? my understanding is that a turboed 77 will possibly outperform a stock 81 td

i have had a few HZJ77/73 with after market turbos and yes, they pull hard, as hard if not harder than the HDJ81. it comes down to more than just the turbo though. fuel settings, boost settings, which turbo etc all have a bearing on performance.

just the 3rd member, the housings are plenty strong as well as the birfs. it is the actual webbing in the open housings (or in reality the lack of webbing) that makes them weak.
factory locker is the best bet.

Hi Wayne,
l am looking to turbo my HZJ77 before the trip to Alaska this summer,l was camping around the hilly area of lakeof the woods, western Ontario, towing a loaded up millitary trailer,2 adults and 3 kids, just not enough power.
Where is that place you get your turbo from??
cheers
Simon

Hi Wayne,
ball bearing or bushing depends on the price,l just want the turbo,l can fab the manifold and the rest as l have turboed a few 3B and 2H before.
l also have a couple of turbo from volvo 850,datsun 280 and one from a 1990 Mr2 turbo,l am going to try the volvo turbo on my BJ42 very soon.is the mr2 turbo good for the 77?
got to watch the $ because l am spending quite a lot on the Bj42 rockrawler rightnow.

bushing turbo is about $1200 and the ball bearing is $1800...
to be honest, give one of those a try... anything will be better than nothing.

A turbo'd HZJ77 is plenty fun. I drive dan's rig often, and it never disappoints me.
Straight exhaust, 35's and a ridiculous 4 inch body lift from Japan make me grin when behind the wheel.

in the future i think i want to ditch my 81 for a 77.
i love the 70s series way too much.
but dame i love my 81

Is that one of those jpn boddy lifts with bars from each lift block?

Sorry for hi-jacking a Mr2 turbo is a CT20, for a IHZ it should at least have a CT26
