Hi Folks,

This is my first post after being a lurker for some time so please excuse my noob question...

I'm looking at a stock 1986 HJ60 here in British Columbia, Canada that looks good -- 250,000km, no major rust, nice interior and 2H engine. Unfortunately it's automatic and I really want a 5-speed. So my

* How much of an ordeal is it taking the A440 out and replacing with a new H55F/tcase to this engine? (custom mounts & different driveshafts needed ?)
* I see that cruiserteq.com sells new/OEM units but doesn't ship to Canada :( (any other vendors or methods to source this?)
* Am I asking for trouble if I want to put a turbo on a 2H later? (or should I just look for a used 12HT and H55F?)

Thanks,
Jeff

any Toyota dealer can get a brand new H55
you need to add another pedal along with associated plumbing
bellhousing, flywheel, etc
rebuilding the transfer case
WAG to have someone do the work $8,000-9,000 US funds??

Not entirely straightforward:
  • A different bell housing is required - you'll need a late HJ60 or HJ61 bell housing for the H55F
  • The transmission cross member is different and will need to be changed
  • Tailshaft lengths are different
  • The 2H injection pump is specific for the Auto application (I am unsure what the implications of running the auto pump with a manual transmission)

2H with H55F is a great combination - the auto, not so much. So I like your intention and I think its doable if you're keen

I am one who went from an auto to manual. I did have a lot of support but it is entirely doable. Start collecting parts or hit the easy button with a call to @cruisermatt if you can. Pretty sure he has all of the ancillary bits.

It was suggested to me to find a donor vehicle for all the stupid little parts and buy that, I definitely see why. It sounds excessive but if I didn't have the amazing support I did, I'd either still be working on my conversion or be a hell of a lot poorer.

I am 3FE and H55 but man is it nice.

There’s tons of 60 series parts in the lower mainland. Ebi cruisers should have most of the parts needed for the swap.

12H-T and H55F owner here, if you really want the turbo save up and get what you want. It's easier in the long run to just get what you want right up front. Plus it's a lot less hassle not having to gather a bunch of parts. Just my .02 cents.

Now I need to see this local truck with "no major rust".

Making the auto/manual switch is obviously very doable, but I could see the costs racking up very quickly. Plus a lot of downtime for the truck. But hey, we want what we want. I wanted the same thing, and went the route of a donor swap. Rusted out local HJ60/H55f into a rust free (well as close as you can get) FJ60 from Oregon. Fun times.

Here's a pre-swap pic, just for fun.

Get rid of the 2H it is a terrible engine and will not give you any satisfaction.
You absolutely take the 12H-T +H55F, you will not regret it.

The 12HT is absolutely an overrated engine. Good luck finding one, and it'd be insane to run without opening it up to check ringlands. The 2H does exactly what its designed to do, its a superb engine when the application matches its design intent.

Your lack of nuance, and lack of appreciation for design vs application is a bit laughable.

l was offered a 12HT earlier this year the guy said he'd take £9K for it....add the extras to fit it...it'll be around £12k...

My 2H hauls 1Ton of logs every week, commutes 120mls a day. its not fast but it gets me there & back.. 12K amounts to a full respray, complete cab rubber renewal & a new custom made wiring harness & install...

Even in Australia, possibly the continent with the most shipped 12HTs a very good example is now around $US9000

Any second hand 12HT that hasnt been opened up and with a mileage over 350,000klms or so will be in imminent danger of ringland failure and they are still asking for $US6K and a good rebuild would be in the order of $USD6K - especially in the pump and turbo are dealt with at the same time.

Several have converted auto engines to manual with no issues. “Auto” injection pumps seem to be a non-issue.

In Africa, coming from Dancalia Dallol Eritrea going up the mountains from Massawua to Asmara I arrived by a hair's breadth with the low range gears and the engine was dead, to be redone, it only had 300K kilos...
you decide...

Epic locations! I have never been.

Sounds like your 2H was overdue for some maintenance or a rebuild, slow uphills for sure, but not that slow.

Ok, so I took a look today and the body/interior are in great shape but I'm at a loss for the frame... It's been undercoated since day one and regularly done so a lot of that gunk is cracking off but there still is some rust.

Should I be concerned about the frame or can I get away with this?

That last picture is alarming. But we would need more pictures of the rear of the frame, the c-channels. And it’s hard to tell but the rear wheel arch looks like it may have had work done. Though I do see the body seam above the rear wheel so that’s a good sign.
