Shane, I think all the 3-speed TCs came with the PTO gear, and unless spec'd for a PTO the 4 speeds came with a spacer in place of the gear. You can fit a PTO on any 4 speed TC at least up to the split-case 4 speed, but unless it came with the gear, it requires getting into the TC...not a bolt-on.

This is just what I have been told(disclaimer):D

You and I are on the same boat. I got my cruiser in Feb and I love it. Its so simple to work on because of the lack of electronics. Keep the pics comin.

I just finalized the deal with my 78 FJ40 and i am extremely excited and cant wait untill I get s to my house. I purchased the cruiser from a really cool guy in Denver. The cruiser only has approx. 80K original miles on the clock and is in excellent mechincal condition. The cruiser actually has a factory PTO winch! . i am pretty sure that is a really rare option. It also has a Old Man Emu lift..Anyways, it's been a long time comin, but I am finally part of the 40 series crew ;) ! although 80 still rule! LOL...........Here are a couple of pics:

AFAIK, the last PTO winch year was 1975, but I have never seen one stock on a 1975. Also, literature indicates the last official year for softtop was 1975, but again, never seen one in the flesh.

The 1977 Toyota USA accessory booklet indicates a Warn electric winch and Warn hubs available as options.

The yellow truck has an "Unleaded fuel only" sticker on the dash, but unleaded fuel was not mandated until 1/79 when catalyst became standard.

Would you post a pic of how the jerry can mount connects to your spare tire carrier? Been wanting to make one of those. Nice cruiser BTW.

I will post pics of the engine bay for the smog equipment( forum member request) and also where the jerry can connects to the spare tire when my cruiser comes, it is being shipped to my house on wed. or thurs.....

I wonder if it's a 12/78 - I've seen a lot of wierd mix and match on those. This one has the seatbelts on the roll bar - I thought that started in 1/79 too. But everything else I see says 78.

Either way, super nice rig!

My '74 has those stickers? I think if you were emissioned it would have them.

My 12/78 has the seat belts on the roll bar, and the jump seats have different legs than the '79 ones...Must have been odd to see brand new 1978 models being delivered in early 1979. My title shows that mine was first registered in early 1979.

The 12/78 tubs also accomodate OEM soft tops, too. I used to have an Ehsan top, it fit well and the holes/captive nuts were all there to secure the hardware. I do know that emissions wise 12/78 has some unique parts.
