So... I've been looking at Porsche 911's for quite a while now trying to find a deal that fits the budget and my lifelong love for these cars. My first ride in a Porsche was in 1972, long before most of you were around, in my uncles relatively new '65. I was 10. From that day until today, I've always wanted one. As a kid, I got Car & Driver and always looked forward to any issue that had some Porsche highlighted.

My Uncle still has his '65 and has rebuilt it more than a couple times over the years. Still looks new.

So, in my search I found out about a rich guy in San Fran who had a collection of 10 classic '80's 911's and he's liquidating the entire lot. 7 are already gone... and quickly. One of those left is an '86 that has been modified to the 90's wide body style recently. It also has a complete, documented Engine, Transmission rebuild and new clutch all done 2k miles ago... the bill I looked at totaled $11k for that work. Also upgraded with a push button automatic convertable which is a $2k upgrade.

It has some minor "personality" on the interior, but overall seems to be quite a deal. A Porsche specialist here in Atlanta that looked at it thinks I'm stealing it... I hope he's not getting paid under the table

Here are a couple of pics.

Won't be heading to Cullowhee in this... but I could see some Blue Ridge parkway driving in my future.

I'll be flying to San Fran on the 13th and taking what will amount to be the ultimate road trip... 2511 miles in a couple days. Woohoo!!!

I'm planning to take a few pics along the way.

I'm sure I'll pass some spots where I will wish I had the Hundy or SORF, but I'll pass them quickly... :grinpimp:

Risky to buy sight unseen, but no money down until I get there, so a ticket to San Fran is my risk. Wish me luck!

Andy, if you want I'll ask about what's left in the stable and see if I can get some pics.

holly smokes steen that is awesome!!! I love 911's :D

man you'll be picking up one sweet ride........ but the best part is driving cross country and really getting to know her!!!

need a co-pilot??

and yes I am jealous; hope it all works out for you

I was gonna say...if you time it right I can be a co-driver...we can do a cannonball run!

Co-Pilot would be great... cannonball run was a favorite movie of mine! I booked a $190 flight to San Fran that lands on the 13th at 10:56.

I had a choice to ship it of course but how often do you get the chance to drive from coast to "almost" coast? I couldn't pass up the chance.

Pretty pumped!

ouch...I have the boys that week...sorry :)

congrats steenh. 911's are a long time favorite of mine as well. looks like a beauty. my two coast to coast trips are some of the best memories ive made as well, cheers. :)

Thats really cool. Looks awesome. Take the camera we want pics of the trip.

Oh and make sure you take some ball bearings.

Camera is a definite. Ball bearings only if one of you decides to get one and wants to race back east

I've never driven through Arizona and NM... not sure whether there is elevation to see or if it's just desert? You'll know soon after I do.

hmmm, I wish my car was on the boat...I could pick it up in Cali at port and race you back....DAMNIT

I HATE YOU.....kidding of course. I drove cross country a few times after college, you might want to take the southern route with the possiblility of snow in lots of areas.

Southern route? Looking at Arizona, NM, TX, Ark route. Hoping to have the top down for most of it.

Dan... just buy a Porsche quick and join me... you know you want to! I'll supply the ball bearings.

I did both I-10 and I-40 thru the southwest out there.......... you can't go wrong it is beautiful; such grandeur

if you get the chance take the short detour off I-40 to Sedona, AZ cool little town but the scenery was the best I saw out west..... unblieveable

plus the little highway that dropped down to there reminded me of the Tail of the Dragon in eastern Tn.......... it'd be a blast in a 911

How short a detour is that JP?

My fear is that my plan to get back on Sunday will turn into a much longer trip because I'll be seeing the country I really want to live in... and stop way to often! But... how short is that detour :grinpimp:

steen if I remember correctly it is roughly and 1.5 hours from south of I-40 may be more then you are looking to stray, but if you do decide to check it out I'll find the name of that road for you that has all the twisties............ I was having a blast on them in the FJC :grinpimp:

either way after your road trip out west.......... you'll be looking for any excuse to get back out there.

I really miss being out there and envy your trip

*edit* just mapquested it........ it is less than an hour off of I-40 so yeah you should check it out; it would be a good place to waste a few hours or spend the night

You get yourself to Atlanta on the 12th, and $190 for the flight to San Fran... I'll cover the rest. No more envy.... you'll have plenty of pedal time in the 911, and see the spots once again!

You can do it!!!!

If I didn't have a final exam on the 14th I would seriously be there......you just can't beat a road trip like that ESPECIALLY in a 911

are you seriously doing the whole trip solo??

Be the ambitious one... take the exam early! What professor wouldn't dig the "hey... I already know it all now" line?

It's a solo trip... I do have a phone though :D ... and my new baby.

yeah except for the teacher knows me too well; lets just say I am not the ideal pupil :o

mapquest says 2500 miles.......... if you keep her steady at 100mph shouldn't be much more than a full days drive

My teachers didn't know me that well... rarely saw them.

Nodoze and a noon start on Thurs and I'm home by 4 Friday with the time change. Been stuck in Atlanta traffic that long.
