Massive box of OEM goodness landed today from the parts guy formerly known as Beno. He searched out all the non US components so I can take these axles apart and reassemble them with all OEM parts

sweet mother of part numbers batman!

‘‘Twas a fine day at Tilda Bogue …….

Things started off a little rough when the very first full float axle stud snapped off.

I hosed it all down yesterday with Kroil and had high hopes.

I broke out the heat and smoked the rest of them good and they came off clean. Hammer drill made pretty easy work of the cone washers. The one with the broken stud was a bear but I got it

Third came out easy enough after I put the tranny jack on the pinion. The pinion had fluid leaking so it was good we went deep

Red bought me some Popeyes and I took a break in the shop

I spent a bunch of time getting the mating surface perfect because I’m trusting this paper gasket Mr T uses. Lately I’ve been using FIGP but Beno sent the gasket and I am trusting the science.

I’m old and 3rd are heavy but a lift and a tranny jack made it nice.

After that got in I dove into the hubs and drums.
This hammer screwdriver is the bomb for hard to pull jIS screws. The ones in the hubs were not moving but this licked em

This 70 was well maintained. The insides looked good on the pass side. One retainer pin was gone but no corrosion or mud.

The hubs came clean. Drums came off without too much hassle.

The drivers side backing plate is a bit crusty which is common. I’ll clean it up best I can and fluid film it to stop the rust.

There was a little bigger pile of springs in the driver drum.

I’m calling it a Saturday. A good Saturday…...new studs installed, races in the freezer and hubs painted for repack tomorrow.

Happy Fathers Day fellas.

Got in early and repacked the rear hubs. Putting your races in the freezer overnight makes them easy to tap in

After both hubs got repacked with grease I dissected the passenger side and exposed the backing plate and wire brushed all the rust away

This is my go-to rust converter. I will let this soak and set up and then treat the edges with Fluid Film. FF will creep in all the places the converter and paint would not reach.

I separated all of the parts by side. Some are marked on the part L or R but you can also look on the bag. If the first 5 numbers on the bag end in an odd number that is the right side of the vehicle. Toyota does not make Bell Cranks for 60s and since I don’t see any here then they must not make them for 70s either so I just polished these up

The converter has started to cure. Off to the drivers side.

The 24v ComeUp 9000 synthetic made it yesterday.

I was able to get it mated to the Dobinsons bumper today. Once again I managed to double the estimated install number but it’s all good now.

The bumper needs an offset fairlead. Todd has one on the way from Slee and this project is in the bag.

Did you run spacers with those steelies?

Did you run spacers with those steelies?

They fit without them but they are likely going to rub the tub without them. They are 4” BS and the tires have a little girth. Once I get the lift on it I’ll know. I have a set of 1” ready in case.
