From everything I've read, this is a design flaw with the transmissions and is not related to any relatively minor modifications (e.g. 33" tires). I've followed the issue fairly closely since I just had to deal with it (see previous comments), and the issue has not been definitively diagnosed. I know this doesn't help much, but I'd prepare for the worst-case scenario - full trans replacement.
Sad face. Thanks so much for the info and it has definitely been a 7-10k fear of mine.

I also have a 2010 Lexus GX460 with some modifications. The car spent its entire life of a tiny island (Guam max speed limit 35mph) and I shipped to Alaska to drive down to Panama. Made the trip, BUT….

-early on ran into 4LO, check engine and traction control warnings and car would not shift past 4th gear.

-warming the car was a must, as well as installing a Bluetooth computer to clear all warnings before car would shift into higher gears and run normally.

-no mechanic could fix or tell me an answer. Closest I got was a guy in El Paso told me the tires (33in) were too big and it was confusing the computer based on set/required output to reach desired speed. This triggered a protection mode saying solenoid C and D were bad.

-the problem is getting worse and I’m starting to smell burning from the engine on longer trips.

-I am more than happy to replace solenoids, but don’t want to pay $500-1000 if that’s not the problem.

-I also wanted to see if you pursued a fix for your issue? And how that went?

-I read the below reply and it’s extremely detailed and informative, but not sure if my situation is the same?

-OBD 2 (II) says I’m experiencing these two main codes:

I have a buddy with a lifted 470 that is experiencing the same thing (the only other lifted GX owner I know) so I would love whatever feedback anyone has.

Is yours a Prado?

Not sure if they sell the Prado there but know for sure they have the 460.

I came across an unusual optioned 460 that wasn’t sold in the states. When I researched further I was told it was brought back by military member from Guam.

What sort of options did it have?

Going to tag onto this thread, as I experienced similar issues with my 2011 GX460 -- 165k miles.
I had P0761/P2714 codes, but the vehicle seemed to shift perfectly fine. I ended up ordering a case of WS fluid to perform periodic drain & fills, and was really curious about the state of the fluid. It was fairly dark when I did the first 2 quarts. Cycled another 4 quarts through with ~50-100 mile drive intervals between, and one day it just ceased to engage in gear while making a left turn.

Bounced around between different quotes and shops, and ended up taking it to a local transmission shop with a good rep. They ended up replacing the torque converter and doing a full rebuild on the transmission. Cost was ~5700 :(

Drove like new for a couple of weeks, and then I started getting a strange shudder between 1st and 2nd gear. It started off infrequently, and seemed to happen as the vehicle warmed up, and particularly in stop and go scenarios, like neighborhood stop signs or traffic lights. It felt incredibly random at first, and I had chalked it up to maybe the rebuilt settling in, but it began to happen more often so I brought it back up to the transmission shop. They ran tests and didn't find any pressure issues in the valves, verified fluid levels were correct, and sent me on my way. It was infrequent at this point, so when they test drove it, of course, didn't shudder at all.

Anyhow, fast forward a couple more weeks and it starts happening more consistently, and I bring it back to the shop. They end up tearing it down again and checking everything over and swapping out the transfer case again. I picked it up, and 5 miles down the road it shuddered again. I turned around and brought it back up and asked them to just drive it and figure out what was going on.

So today I went back over and one of the techs who was working on it said it was the transfer case. He pulled the bar that connects the t-case to the front diff/axle (I'm guessing?) and drove it without issues. The owner/primary mechanic was out sick so I didn't get to talk with him about it yet, but does that sound possible?

I don't know enough about how the all-time 4WD works on these, but is removing the bar that brings power to the front axle an alternative while I figure out what I'm going to do with the supposed transfer case issue? Seems like it's running in RWD now, but I haven't driven it myself.

Meant swapping out the torque converter :)

Man that is brutal. Lot of money to pay for no resolve. I’m hoping for less expensive news.

My 460 is in the shop now. So far they found minor amounts of metal shavings in the transmission fuel and think it’s a solenoid issue only. I will know more information before COB today.

For sure, hope yours is an easier fix!

Solenoids checked out fine.
Filter contained a lot more metal shavings.
Looking like a transmission rebuild at 104K miles.
That sucks, sorry to hear that man. You gonna go for it?

I weighed out the cost of the rebuild and what I had already had sunk into it and just decided I'll keep mine going. This driveshaft/transfer case issue is a bit disconcerting, but I'm hoping by the time I'm through all of this, it'll be a tank I can eventually hand down to my son.

They got back to me today and said the solenoids have the correct resistance, BUT they found metal shavings stuck inside them all creating faulty performance. They are gonna clean and put back together for now, but transmission is an inevitable future problem. I guess it will give me some time to research best transmission to put in?…

At this point I have too much invested in the car to not fix. And I couldn’t sell it to someone knowing it has this problem. Special place in hell for that person, which reminds me, I should call the guy who sold it to me haha.

Also agree, I think this is a car to pass down

Chevy makes performance automatics - you could be the first to have a 10 speed auto in your GX.

10L90-E Automatic Transmission: 19420480 | Performance - https://www.chevrolet.com/performance-parts/transmissions/10l90-e

You'd honestly probably get better gas mileage too lol.

No. 2010 Lexus GX460. Same Prada frame I think
any recommendations on best transmission swap for a 2010 Lexus GX460? I have seen six different mechanics and none have an answer for the issue and I’m not savvy enough to accomplish the work around @Acrad recommended. Additionally with the metal shavings found, I figure I’m on borrowed time anyway.

Hi Guys,

I've been stalking this thread for a bit after my 2013 4runner was stolen a little over a month ago. I was looking at GX460s and the thread popped up(brushed off as relatively infrequent after talking to a mechanic). I shopped around for low miles and good maintenance records until I found one with 96k miles. I finally picked it up last Friday, drove maybe 150 miles since, and what a surprise to find on a cold morning(Check engine, trac off, 4low lights). Low and behold it's P2714. I'm trying not to lose my head but the dealer I bought it from ensured I signed off "as-is." So - knowing the information in the thread - any advice on first steps? Take it to a shop and have them partially drain fluid? Replace the solenoids?

Dang, sorry to hear this... I would try a partial drain but would only consider it temporary, my guess is you're going to need work inside... sorry to be negative but it seems that when these go, there's not a lot to do but repair/replace
