I use the Ultra Mix oil in my MS 500i and my 4-mix units. Mix it at 50:1.

I use the standard STIHL mix oil and 50:1 in every else. I use 50:1 in my old Contra and 090’s that were built in the 1960’s.

My wife uses whatever 2-cycle I have mixed.

One of the biggest challenges / killers of an air cooled two-cycle engine is heat.

I’ve seen people run the best 2-cycle oil but if they mill lumber with a dull chain, the heat is too much for the lubrication to handle.

When ripping logs, I’ve seen the air intake plug with the wood “noodles” and the engine will overheat. The overheating causes the oil to break down.

When the lubricity is gone or the thermal load is beyond its design specs, the piston expands due to the reaction and material transfer begins. This is the scoring of the piston.
 
I know a few arborist who run AmsOil at 100:1. They are anal about their fuel and mixing as well as chain sharpening. They do not let anyone run their saws.

The key is good fuel. The more ethanol the fast you get “phase separation” in the fuel.

If you want to see phase separation, take your mixed pump gas and poured some in a clear container with a lid. Let it sit overnight or for a few days. You will see the layers of fluids. The heavy solvents are generally at the bottom. The die is above the solvents. There is a weird layer of fuel or additives and the top layer will be almost clear.

The “phase separation” happens with any mixed fluid but with ethanol it happens extremely fast. This is one reason you want to vigorously shake your fuel can before filling you equipment.
