i thought that patrol only had a 3L in it....

That Patrol above does....

The 4.2L factory turbo diesel is very common is some parts of the world and not so common in others. It is a super sweet engine, best diesel Nissan ever put in a 4wd truck. Many of them in OZ have hit 500+ hp with some mods. Many more have 500,000+ kilometers on them and are still going strong. The Y60 & Y61 models of Patrol 1988 to 2010 came with the 3L TD, the 2.8L TD and the 4.2 N/A and 4.2TD. The 3L is know as a hand grenade but in reality it was only early production engines that failed from what I have read over the years. And for every one that failed there is 10 of them with hundreds of thousands of miles on them with no problems. The Norway Patrol pictured above for example which is on an around the world tour and has the 3L TD.

Somehow, classics (think 80, GU patrols..) are made by bolting truck/bus engine & drivetrain to a nice cabin...

Sadly, this magic formula seem to hv gone the way of dodo birds with political/environmental correctness and slick engineering ... not to mention the market demands of city slickers looking for a 'lifestyle'.

The grenade (3.0) was never put in a Y60 anywhere. The Y60 either had a TD2.8T or the TD4.2. The Safari Y60s also got a TD4.2T factory option from 93-97. The Y61s got the grenade, TD4.2T or the TD4.2TI. The smaller displacement engines were mainly for the European marketability - where annual licensing is based on engine size.

(Says the guy who made the topic up. :D )

 We threw my roof system back on for some travel during the Memorial Day weekend. I'll get better pics of it now and how I did the "Rack Slam" to get it to stop costing so much extra in fuel and mileage loss. The "Slam" works great, the basic writeup (not finalized yet) is here: UY Wiki Submission: Thule M.O.A.B. "Rack Slam"

Yummy, v8 powar!

mmmnnnnn....long range tank!

Since I have done these trips down south before I know what it needs and what will be used by me on these trips. It doesn't need a RTT, I can sleep in the back. It doesn't need a water tank or water system, 5gal jugs work just fine and are available everywhere down south. One of those will fit in the back well. It does need a rack for surfboards though!

^30 plus gallons right?? Nice setup, nicer engine, going to tuck and loom all those wires? Think you'll miss the Tacoma at all?

38 gallons for the LRT.

Not worried about wiring looking kind of ugly right now. There is not much of it compared to what I am used to!

I already miss my Taco but at the same time, am super stoked on this FJ60. I could list likes/dislikes of the Taco. I keep going over the dislikes in my mind to make me miss the Taco less!

Looming the wire just makes it impossible to diagnose any problems later on. Evenly placed zip-ties would be my recommendation, just to keep it up and out of the way.

Why? I've never had any issues diagnosing what is wrong because wire looms were there. They may make replacing a wire harder, but they also make it much less likely a replacement will be needed. If you do need to replace, just split the loom with a bandage scissors, replace the wire, and wire tire together. After years of using them, my favorite is black UV protected spiral wrapped loom. Choose the relaxed size that is just smaller than the bundle of wires to be loomed. The tightness will keep internal abrasion between the wires down, and the spaces between the wraps will allow dirt and moisture to escape. Also choose a temperature range suitable for where it is going to be used.

Note: By "loom" I meant "wrap". Yes, technically a loom can trap dirt and moisture, but so can leaving things loose allow wear spots.
