use RTV sealant.....i had it on the bench, did the searches here, got opinions and used just the Toyota gasket (with the black bead of sealant already on the face) as some have here with success apparently. now, i have the leak on the driver's side. i really like to do things the hard way so there you go....(BTW FSM nor Haynes mentions using sealant here probably because eveyone knows to do it - not dissing the board or those kind enough to respond just posting up some experience....so there goes the weekend (i'm slow)

I have had excellent results using "The Right Stuff". Kind of spendy but you can use for oil and water gaskets, eliminating the asket altogether. Stays flexible and you don't have to wait for curing. 1/8th in on a mating surface is all that is required.

Had an Austin Healey (talk about leaks!) that I got almost completely dry using this product. You can get it at most auto supply stores.

X2 on the making sure the pump is flat. Use a piece of glass big enough to check mating surfaces

It's been my experience to never use sealnt on machined surfaces. All that's required is a gasket. Theres always different conditions such as Intake Manifolds and Headers but for the most part just a gasket has never really given me any trouble.

That sucks to have to do it all over again, maybe something wasn't torqued down right? My father and I have different views on this subject. He is of the mind RTV sealant is a cure all for everything as I'm a purist and don't believe in the stuff (except on trail repair! Very useful).

Have put in a few water pumps with no problem without RTV. That is how it comes factory.

I second d'animal-there may be a problem with the housing. I've changed the waterpump on 6 trucks so far (not a lot, I admit), and always used the factory gasket with the appropriate torque for the bolts, and never had a drop leaking.
cheers,
j

i've never used permatex there. never had an issue.

my big suggestion is if you replace a water pump belt, replace the water pump too, cause unless you put the belt on real dang loose, the pump will not be far behind.

thanks for the tips! My hasn't failed me yet, so I will keep this post in mind. (knock on wood, while kneeling for the cruiser gods)

thanks for input

..i checked the surfaces...the block surface was super clean, steel wool yada, yada....and yep, i'm (or was) a purist and avoided some advice from shade trees at work....triple checked the torques and the torque wrench....i slightly wet the factory gasket, neatly placed it etc. .....believe me, i'm stubborn enough to try it again without sealant .....but with kids and no time to play, i'll probably gunk it.....

oh yeah...

i replaced the pump with Toyota, Toyo gasket, new belts, cleaned the bolts...the whole nine yards (did the radiator while i was at it...the oil cooler hose....)

great advice!!!!!

last question

and then i swear i'll drop this....you non-sealant types, did you wet the gasket at all before you placed it? (i'm assuming we're talking about the Toyo gasket with the small sealant bead already on it). thanks

The 62 pump job is admittedly not alot of fun, sorry to hear yours went bad. I used Permatex spray (form a gasket) or somthing like that. By design it looked as if the weakest link is the mating surface where the pump and "back plate", for lack of better description, come together would be the most likely to leak. Permatex spray w/gaskets on both sides of the plate and havn't had any issues. Good luck on the next go-around.

Never used permatex either, got a bad waterpump once that had a bad internal gasket, but used only supertack to get the OEM gasket to stick. Other than that, nothing. Sorry you had so much trouble.

orange high temp RTV can fix anything!

I didn't wet the gaskets either. but the last 2 I did (BJ70 and HJ60) actually had a metal like gasket (or some pretty hard polycarbon).
cheers,
jan

Is a very thin coat of Toyota black the wrong stuff to use for this? I think that is what I used (its been 3 years since I did the job) and it has not leaked yet. Sorry to hear about your job, but I have heard of bad water pumps from the dealer so you can never rule that out.
