Been searching high and low and though I found one build with a guy running leafs in the rear I've been unable to find anyone running leafs up front. Any out there?

Not terribly interested in starting a discussion of links vs leafs. Thanks guys.

The front steering on an 80 doesn't lend itself well to doing leafs. That was a hold up for a lot of mini trucks and also for me when I did my old truck. You can now get high steer arms that should clear the springs, but I am not sure it has been done. With the arms I paid for leaves still wouldn't clear.

There is a kit somewhere. I've seen it before. And it would eliminate those low hanging arms up front... Still digging my coils though.

Cue the Devo music. This idea definitely takes us backwards.

I'll be swapping in a 60 so I'm sure that would effect this as well. Lots of research to do yet but preliminary research points at radius arm/ panhard or leaves. Believe i will run leafs in the rear with a 14b. Stock gas tank and drivetrain are coming out. Just wondered if itd been done. Cant seem to find too many 1 ton builds.

What would you propose?

I don't think the conversation is there just yet - before someone can give you any kind of good advice they have to know your intentions and understand why the coils aren't working for you.

So turn that around a bit - what problem are you trying to solve?

I strongly suggest you have 6 beers before you ask something like that again (joke no offence)
I have seen YouTube where FJ60 was converted to FJ80 suspension by Jonathan Ward
1989 FJ62 extreme custom Toyota Land Cruiser by TLC , but not the other way around.

I bought a 92 FJ80, engine runs, truck drives, but pisses oil all over. (Which isn't really the reason for the Cummins it's just kind of ancillary) Only paid 1k for it though.

Plans are to pull the engine/trans/t-case and fit a 5.9 12valve ve pump cummins with an NV4500 and NP205. Will remove stock fuel tank and fit in either a custom fuel cell or a tank from another vehicle. Will then be running 60 up front and 14 bolt in the rear, both with ARBs.

Intentions are to make it a mild crawler, lots of desert exploration - solo, all purpose rig with good road manners and the ability to drive rural Nevada highways at 65-80 mph for hours on end.

Front suspension:
Radius arms would seem a decent choice, as would a properly set up 3 link, however leaves also seem like a viable option.

The rear I'm pretty set on running leaves.

I know I'm re-engineering the wheel here but hey! :hillbilly:

I guess I ought to add, I'd probably be happy with some simple bolt on lifts for the stock axles/links but because of the torque and weight of the cummins I'm not going to waste time messing with axles that will likely break and break when I'm in BFNV.

Also.. I'm not trying to knock cruisers or their axles. I bought the FJ because I love Toyotas and I've always like the 80 series, I however want a powerful diesel engine. I do know the stock axles hold up quite well to abuse but I know they won't hold up to what I'm after. So here we are.

I didn't say anyone told me it couldn't be done but rather I asked a question and I got a few responses and a rash of lame questions... so 4 years later here I am reading Phils thread with the same questions, why would ya wanna do that, and I think back on this thread...

Now I realize what mud is all about and its not this but thats okay.

So, sure I could have linked the rear too, the front 3 link works great, but why?

And why on earth would I have kept the s***ty stock links?

Leaves ride great, handle a good payload, can max out 14" shocks, durable, cheap, low maintenance, easy... now you know.

No regrets

Like I said this isn't what Mud is good for but thats okay. It's a good resource for things other than suspension (although there is some good tech here and there but it seems to be ridiculed) unless you're all about staying in the cookie cutter box of j and slinky springs and short fragile stock links. Its hard building things yourself though huh
