Ham is not required. I would recommend you at least have FRS and if you want get a ham to monitor that is great as well. The trail leader will decide on communication based on the group.

Any recommendations on a BaoFang for monitoring? Seems like there are a few different options and I don’t want anything too complicated. My brain is running on reserves as it is.

Here are a couple inexpensive go-to units. Folks at LCDC will be able to quickly get you on the trail group frequency...and then lock it so it doesnt accidentally change on you during use.

Tons of rebadged units that are nearly ifentical... If you stick with actual Baofeng, without another company name prefix, you’ll be in good shape.

Thanks Markuson. I opted for the UV-82 kit. I have avoided getting into the comms world because I know deep down that it is yet another black hole that me and my money will disappear into.
First it's just a $90 handheld and next thing you know, I am a few thousand dollars poorer and sitting in my basement trying to have a conversation with some dude sitting in his basement somewhere in Wales - all just so I can monitor you guys for two days

$30 boo-fangs are the way to go man! As much as I want a proper HAM, I don't wheel without being in a convoy and I've managed to get miles of range with the boofang. I’m signed up! Newbie to this this forum and the Land Cruiser world! Excited to meet other LC owners in Co this summer. I have a stock 2020 heritage edition... haven’t made any mods but considering better tires at the very least for CO trip. Otherwise, I’m staying on the easy easy trails, if any. Any other tips, suggestions, etc for this newbie? I took my LC to Colorado, on a random road trip, and was in Ouray. Lovely place, but didn’t do any trails bc had no other vehicle buddies. But hoping for a better experience now w this get together!!!

If you can add rock sliders ($1-1.5k) you’d be basically all set. BUT... If you don’t add sliders? -Don’t let that stop you. Ouray is very doable with just ATs and remived side steps...including some of the most well-known trails. Whatever you do...it will be a great time.
Welcome and you couldn't have picked a better event to get some wheeling done with folks of all levels of knowledge and experience. My first was last year and it was a blast. Like @Markuson said, AT tires and good to go. There will be plenty of rigs with more gear to help if you should need. A really great community of drivers.

I fully agree with Markuson (as if he needs me feeble recommendation) that very strong rock sliders are highly recommended - especially for Mineral, north side of Imogen, Yankee Boy, and Pole Creek area. There are photos on this forum where members have done serious damage to lower body panels. I've said it on this forum way too many times that last summer our family did a ton of trails between Ouray/Telluride/Lake City in a stock '08 with stock-sized tires and average A/T tires by Yokohama and no extra 4x4 gear. You'll be going with a solid group which will be huge in your learning curve, building confidence, and making some great connections. My profile pick is our '08 going up the west side of Engineer Pass (which I don't recommend doing during sunset unless you want the sun beading directly in your eyes).Don't be surprised if you see a Prius or Civic on the trails. Just smile to them and don't try to understand.

Well, if you are willing to voluntarily venture into a tire thread on this forum, you don’t need to worry about any of the trails in Ouray. They are tame by comparison

Good to see you here @Vics, as I told you at Lone Star Roundup these folks will take good care of you. Also there isn't anything on the Alpine Loop that can compare technically to Katemcy Rocks so it will be smooth sailing in comparison to what we were looking at a few weeks ago, but the views will be far superior. There will be a few optional hard trails on the itinerary I'm sure but the vast majority will be a lot easier than the "green" trail my new friend AJ broke his driveshaft in half on at KR LOL.

Looks like it may Kebler Pass route for me from Crested Butte over to Paonia and then Delta. Route 50 from Gunny to Montrose is going to be jacked up for the next couple of years supposedly, with limited and full closings over that time
.If anyone going to LCDC is headed west on Rt 50, and wants to make a pitstop for a night in good old Crested Butte, hit me up! I've got plenty of room, and a big driveway.

I came down that way in 2018, it's a pretty scenic drive past the westside of the Capitol Peak and Ragged Mountain areas. Significantly less traffic than you would typically find on US50 but obviously the construction might impact that now.

I'm game if folks are wanting to caravan over from the Denver area. That could be fun.
