Got it. Thanks!

Yeah, I do know that modern AWD is better on slushy, icy roads. But, I grew up with just straight 4wd, on or off, in an F250 and later in a couple of Jeeps and they always worked fine in the snow. I live by the ocean and so, even when I do go to the snow, it's 5+ hours of dry pavement to get there. I think, overall, this mod will be good for the driving I do.

Glad to know it's okay to engage it on the fly! Thanks for the info.

Got this installed over the weekend. So far so good. I really like it on the highway especially. It was already pretty smooth, easy driving truck, but even more so now.

I will say doing the t-case part on the floor isn't a ton of fun, but no surprise there. The only thing that I struggled with a little were the pre-load spacers for the rear shaft. I had two and they were tough getting them in position (and comfortable they were staying in position) while installing the rear extension housing. But, eventually got it.

Looking forward to getting 20MPG now, lol.

How's everyone doing in terms of MPG improvement? I'm tossing around the idea of ordering the kid, and am curious to see how long it would take to pay for itself :D

Also very curious of any improvement. I'm in the "loves AWD" camp, especially with 2" of snow in the forecast today. But I think I'm smart enough (jury's still out) to push a button when it's needed, and so far everyone seems to love the improvement in daily driving.

Plus I want to rip my case apart sometime next year for the lower gearing anyway. "While you're in there..."

I've done mainly town driving since, so any mileage differences are nominal, if any. I think the MPG increases to justify the swap is going to be tough. For me the payoff was more in the drivability side, and I like the idea of not spinning everything in the front when not needed - which for me is 95% of my driving. Don't get me wrong though, I fully support justifying it however you need to, lol. In fact, you'll probably see +3 MPG with your style of driving (happy to help.. :D).

Also, one of my concerns in doing the PT conv was loss of AWD in the snow. We probably get 6 days a year of ice and/or snow on the roads here. We just had a round last week where there was a fair bit of snow and slush on the roads for a day and I thought the PT did fine on it. I'm sure I'd agree with most that on ice the AWD would be better, but again, that's rare here and it sure will be nice having 2WD the other 350+ days a year.

So I have been dailying this set up for a year now, also with some pretty nasty Snow and Ice commutes in the canyons of Northern Utah and am totally happy with it in 2WD. i just filled up to day and noted 14 MPG on my last tank that was 95% highway pushing 6000 pounds of cruiser. prior to the PT kit is was 12-13 mpg and now i am 13-14...

I do have the 10% UD and the Low range gears. I think this would be the first or second modification i would do on any 100 series that comes into my possession right behind lift/tires.

@saucebox let me know if you want to take a spin with part time/underdrive/low range gears. Kurt will take your money after you get out the car....

@DTCsk8er, the benefits I see of going part-time are being able to drive on a broken diff with out pulling flanges/drive shaft, less wear and tear on the front end (CV's and Diff bushings), lighter steering, eliminating torque steer, and drifting are the things that come to mind.

:p Kurt's never turned down my money!

I'm rarely up by Logan, but that commute is almost legendary. Can't turn down that kind of offer though. I'll PM you if I can get up that way, or if you're ever down this way I'll rearrange schedule to make it work.

I will second what @mderrick said about the benefits. I've only got about 500 miles post conversion, all in town/short freeway driving. The difference in the way the truck drives, to me, is stunning. It's so smooth and light. Plus the bonus piece of mind of being able to get home on a broken front dif or broken CV joint. I started seriously considering this kit after watching a friend break a CV axle on a really steep, really long climb (not in a Land Cruiser.) It was sketchy getting him out of there and I was imagining having to somehow get the wheel off and get the flanges off... it would have been a mess. So, I'm happy to have that piece of mind.

About the AWD in the wet, slush, icy road conditions... I'm an avid skier and have been driving in those conditions every winter since I was 16. When the roads are like that, I don't intend to be going fast enough to where my AWD/traction control system is going to be the difference between staying on or off the road. I also take our AWD Audi to track days once in a while and have done a few days at Laguna Seca in the pouring rain. In those cases, at the limit, the AWD will cause the car to push if I come into the turn too hot or if I start to hydroplane and drift. I can't break it free and spin, even if I try (and I've tried.) Which is great. It's very predictable when I lose control. BUT, that is pushing as hard as I can in a controlled track environment. I would never intentionally be driving at that limit on the street! Especially in a snow storm in Land Cruiser. And if chains/4 wheel drive are required, it's not too much sweat off my back to lock the hubs and push a button. So, for me personally, the benefits for 99% of my driving far out weigh the loss of AWD. As a disclaimer, I don't LIVE in the snow. If I did, I might think otherwise.

My point is, it's by far the best mod I've done to my rig. Aaaaaand, Kurt can take your money.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it!

And yeah, we'll take anyone's money :D

I'm about to get my second set of tires after having done the part time kit.

has anyone switched from the standard hard core AT tires like k02, wildpeak etc, back to a more friendly rain tire, or at least something that does a better job in the rain and still doesn't look like a regular soccer mom tire?

Does installing this kit get rid of the “clunk thud” transmission problem all these trucks have? Since no one seems to be able to figure out how to get rid of the clunk feeling it would make more sense to spend money on this kit vs. throwing money at trying to solve the unsolvable.

A lot of it for me but not 100%

Good to know it’s not just me, I’m new to 100s and figured a ujoint was going bad or something.

Probably not the U Joints. I bought OEM joints and had them replaced just to be sure it “wasn’t “ my U joints. It made zero difference in my clunk thunk issue. I was really hoping the part time conversion would fix that. I had read that it did, but I guess not.

did you check your diff bushings up front?

Do you still offer this kit? Website says out of stock. Also, will having this kit create any issues if a front kicker is fitted (in the future)?
