So I've been planning on buying a 1996 Land Cruiser (unlocked) with almost 300k miles on it. But, I've just found a 2000 Land Cruiser with slightly fewer miles for slightly more money. Both are within my budget.

It's going to be a daily driver and light off-road (camping) car.

So, which would y'all prefer? What are the pros and cons of each?
I voted 80 instantly BUt if its light off road and DD take the 100 and the mileage that comes with it. JMO

Had to tip the scale past 50 %for the 80, I own one. My advice would be the newest one you can.

You're going to be in for a lot of repairs/catch up maintenance with either one. I hope you're ready for that. If you are, then just go with the 80 because it sounds like you want that one more - which is smart bc its way better anyway :flipoff2:

So a black 1996 80 with @295k for how much? $4500? Im guessing here....

vs

white 2000 100 with @275k mi for what? $5200?

I think Id go with the 80.

i was in your predicament a year and a half ago, was looking at both same reasons, same usage. Always wanted 80, blew my chance years ago with friend trading one in on a Highlander don't know what he was thinking (new wife and kid). Finally found one, not to far from home, from MUD member, very well maintained mechanically sound and had been baselined mostly. I discovered after looking for a few months the good ones go quickly. Mine was on Craigslist less than 36 hours when I found it, I flew from were I am to get it before the other 3 individuals got there. No regrets would by this one again and maybe another in my future just because. 80's just have more personality. Good luck

If it's a money issue, I would skip the LC altogether and go with a 3rd Gen 4Runner. If it's not or money doesn't matter that much then I would be asking what I wanted in a Land Cruiser. The 80 is likely to retain value more than the 100 for a couple of reasons. One it just looks cooler, which is one of the main reasons I wanted one, but also because the 100 is sort boring and unless you tow or are a big family the extra size and power might be overkill. The 4Runner is going to get better MPG, be almost as good off road and much more affordable to maintain than either of the LC's. The 80 is likely the best of the three when it comes to off road prowess, and it's an iconic car that has enough creature comforts to realistically daily drive.

If you want a car that you can feel good about driving and maintaining for the long haul, I would go with the 80. That said, I talk most of my normal friends that aren't into wrenching into 4Runners. Nobody has complained or upgraded to and 80 or 100 yet.

80 series because inline sixes are fantastic and, for the most part, the 80 is a joy to work on.

If you want better mileage and dependability, get a Prius. It's a mediocre car, but one of the best commuter boxes ever made!

80 series I have one duh...
But seriously my neighbor has a 100 ( since new ) we both have just came from Land Rovers, ( I had a D1 and D2) the 80 seems to be a little more accepting of larger tires even in stock config, I just added 305/70/16 MT and he came over and complemented the look. I guess he is more limited on tire sizes. But all the straight 6 motors I have had were stellar, 83 280zx, 05 Is300, 96 C36 AMG. Easy to work on/ maintain

If you plan to do any towing get the 100, otherwise get to 80.

So the 80 is still in undercoat.
There's only one colour for a LC, anything but white is undercoat.

100 is a little more spacious (also slightly larger overall), better road handling, better NVH, generally more comfortable.

80s are the last real landcruiser.
I think you meant to say clear coat, not undercoat, because the 80 series painted white was the only color that came without clear coat on the paint.

What?

It did? Then what is peeling off of my white '96 with factory original paint?

Right now my passengers side has no clear on front fender, clear on front door, none on back door, clear on rear quarter.....so it goes dull, gloss, dull, gloss. Drivers side is almost exactly opposite.

Once the clear starts to go I strip it off.

Unless something else is peeling off. First I heard white had no cc.

Test drive both, and I am sure you know which one you like better. The 100 is hands down a better vehicle in most way. But the timeless classic look of the 80 is the bomb that keep me from selling mine. To me, offroad is where the 80 really shine. But every 80 on the road turns my head! :)

All i can tell you is that's what other mud members have told me, that the color White was the only color to come without clear coat. That's one of the reasons they say white is the best color to buy, because unlike all the other colors, it doesn't have any clear coat to go bad.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Maybe someone post production clear coated mine which is why it sucks at sticking to the paint.

Back on topic.....get an 80. They really are so much fun.

Not much support for the 100 eh? The Lexus sold here has no front axle does the 100?well it's not a Real Cruiser in my mind. Still v capeble off road but for durability I want a real front and rear axle. What is your need. Good advice on previous posts. Curious about prices. Care to share

100series are IFS.
Unless you live in Australia, or the rest of the world that got 105 series. It's the morph in between 80s, and 100s.
Live axle front end. It's the best of both worlds, but no v8, and no turbo diesel.

Post in the 100 section, you'll probably get a different bias.

I've had both. (Almost, I have a 105) 80 is just a little less refined, but a great allrounder, 100 is too, just a little less capable (arguable) and slightly bigger, a disadvantage if you are going to wheel it hard.
In Aus, LC is a full size truck, the extra bulk of the 100s body is noticeable in tight trails. Maybe less an issue in NA where you guys have no shortage of bigger rigs
