Happy new year everyone! The rear axle is in and now sitting on all 4 tires. The front is lower than the rear, but I need to get my other tires on it and get it on level ground, then check things out before I make any changes. I had to make a new bracket for the parking brake cable and all I had was some big angle iron, so I cut it down, made it the right height, and tried to make it not look like a piece of angle iron, now it looks like an A. But what the heck its on there and it works. I'm using the stock parking brake cable, also had to make a short extension for the parking brake cable since the taco axle is a little wider. Need to make brake lines, shock mounts, and get some rear shocks, then it's time for the engine swap.

Did you have to cut and re-mount the spring perches or were they okay in the factory location?

Here we are 10 years later! Wow! Not a whole lot has changed on the cruiser. We don’t really get to use it too much, Christmas trees and a couple camping trips a year. But I really really want to finish what I started.

Coming soon:
-Rear axle build. Not sure on the housing yet, ruff stuff or trail gear. 9.5”, 5.29’s, ARB.
-5.29’s and ARB for the front.
-Atlas t case
-Rebuild trans
-Rock sliders
-Finish front and rear bumpers.
-Interior finishes like cargo area panels and storage.

No room inside and not putting it on the roof! Trailer hitch Christmas tree holder.

Finally getting back to it.

Props to all the folks that have removed all the bracketry with a cut off wheel, dear lord that’s a lot of work. I used a plaz with a gouging tip and it was a lot.

I’ll be documenting progress again, and as always it’ll be slow. But it sure does feel good to work on my Land Cruiser stuff again!

I cant remember exactly, but I ended up cutting the brake line tabs off too, maybe can get away with notching for the ubolts. Ill see if i have any pics. Maybe SOA is a different story.

And yes, cutting all the brackets off sucked. A plasma torch would have been a nice upgrade

My trans has a free ride to Sacramento for a rebuild this Friday. I had to get after it and get it out. Stayed up late Saturday night and got it pulled out.

I can’t believe it’s already been 10 years since I built this. All of the trans and t case linkage has held up really well. Skid plate/cross member, track bar, and all the plumbing was all in good condition and nice and secure. I was pretty satisfied with all of that. It came apart pretty easily.

Moved the axle to the home garage.

Pulled the third member and got it on the stand. I did some research on 60 vs. 80 thirds, but not enough. I read here somewhere on the forum they are the same, come to find out they are not. Sure you can probably take an 80 third and mount it in a 60 axle(never done it so don’t know for sure). As far as the internal parts there are differences, not huge but they matter. Long story short, I’m installing arb’s and bought the wrong parts.
So since I thought they were the same I bought two setup kits for 60 series. Partially wrong parts. I have installed gears and lockers before in 8” thirds. I’ve never done a 9.5” or arb’s before and I failed to do enough research.

So the differences I found. In the bearings, 60 series has 45mm id carrier bearings, 80 series has 50mm id carrier bearings. Arb requires 50mm id carrier bearings.

Also, the smaller bearing on the 80 series pinion has a different taper. Although, when I looked up pinion bearing kits the 60 and 80 rear are the same kits. This is just what I found in this third.

So I just bought the bearings I need locally, they had them in stock. Kickin myself for that one. But moving on…

I started the assembly of the diff. Got the pinion depth and preload setup. I’m having trouble getting the carrier and ring gear set up, backlash specifically. I set my backlash to .008”, rotated 90 degrees and re checked all the way around. It went all the way up to .012”. So I took it all back apart, removed the ring gear, cleaned and inspected all parts and it all looked great. Reinstalled the ring gear and put it all back together. Checked again and same results. I’m getting pretty frustrated and not too sure what to do. Did some searching on the web, some folks don’t go over .002” runout, some don’t go over .005”, some don’t even check and just send it. Can’t find an actual spec on ring gear axial runout. I’m halfway tempted to run it but my good friend who has way more experience than me thinks I’m crazy to run it.

Opinions?

Got the trans back. It got a couple upgrades and a hd tc. Parts coming in from Canada, Arizona, Washington, and Utah. Still messing around with this third member trying to make the lash range a little better. Contacted a couple different diff builders and they said it should be ok to run it like that, but, should…eh. It’s been a real pita. I will never buy Yukon or ARB ever again.

Garage is a mess. There’s a lot going on in there.
