This is one of my ideas for the black box. To keep things simple. Mount a reservoir on the back of the transfer case. I’m thinking around 2 quart capacity, so it’d be about 3 quarts total.

I’m leaning more towards this option just for simplicity but not sure how it would work. I would also put a temp sender in there with a gauge in the cab.

The other option would be remote res in the engine bay somewhere with a pump and an inline screen with a magnet. But with this the res would be above the black box. So the black box would be completely full of oil all the time. And I don’t really like that idea just because it might create a lot of pressure in the black box, maybe? Idk. I’d like to hear thoughts and opinions on these options. And if anyone has experience with this setup please chime in and tell me what you did and how its worked out for you.

There’s a detailed thread in the 80 series section about pumps/reservoirs/temps.
If you search blackbox it comes right up.

There’s a lot of good info in that thread. And verified my concern about keeping it completely full of oil all the time will create excess pressure in the BB. As of right now I’m going to do the tank underneath. No pump or cooler.

Thanks so much for keeping this updated over the years......helps keep us all motivated!

I can't imagine my entire neighborhood and my house burining 100% and having to start all over.......did you rebuild something similar? Where did you live after the fire!?

And I would have left the work truck behind in the fire and taken the cruiser!

Thank you, it’s definitely been hard to try to find the time to work on it. Sometimes I feel like the world is against me working on it. But I finally have that figured out. Friday and Saturday night after the family goes to bed I stay up until 12:30 to get some work done. And I’m still the first one up so I get a little time in the morning too.

After the fire we lived in a 5th wheel trailer behind my work while we rebuilt the house, the house is bigger and nicer but I would give it up in a second to have all of my stuff back. We lived in the trailer for 2 1/2 years. I never want to own one of those again!

I’m a heavy equipment mechanic and I had over $100,000 in tools in my truck at the time. If I had a trailer I absolutely would have taken it with me. I’m just so thankful it didn’t turn out like my Tacoma. Just some minor heat damage and the gash in the fender.

Got the shift levers bent up at work this week. I used an inductance heater to heat and bend the rod. It’s the first time I used it for bending rod and it worked out great. Nice even heat all the way through the rod made nice bends. Can’t wait to check the fit tomorrow night!

Test fit the shift levers and it was a failure. Close, but not gonna work. I dog legged them over too far and it was just touching the body. Straightened out the bends and checked again, much better. Mocked up, tacked , and welded.

Don’t mind the wires going to the switch taped to the trans shifter. That was a temporary thing to get torque converter to lock up so I could drive at highway speeds for a long distance without overheating the trans. Long story but I got it taken care of and those will be going away.

T case linkage is in and adjusted. Shift boot is close to done. I’m going to make another plate that fits better around the original shift boot. Then the twin stick boot will go around/over the plate.

Started on the black box shifter. Gonna have to get creative with that. I think I have to mount the shifter bracket backwards, run the cable toward the front, and loop it around to the back. More to come on that…

My idea on the black box shifter is going to work out. Cut the hole and test fit. Installed the cable at both ends, it made it around and moves nice and smooth. I’m going to bend the shift lever to match the others. Couple crappy pics…

Rain is coming. I had to switch gears and get my drip rails done. Wire wheel on a drill made pretty quick work of getting the old stuff out. I used this because it was free from a friend.

It sets up fast! The rubber gloves I had were 2 sizes too small and honestly the whole job was a pretty messy rushed disaster. But it should be water tight. I’ve got some clean up to do.

Last winter this sucked and it made me feel like a bad Land Cruiser owner.

Started making a tank today. I’ve been trying to learn how to tig weld aluminum since 2017. Never really get good practice time in. Since my time today was limited I just went for it. And it turned out ok. Still working on it but this is where I ended up today. First time making an aluminum tank. Learned the hard way on welding the threaded bungs in, gotta stay more on the tank side. I melted through and distorted the threads on both bungs. Just need to run a tap through them.
