I just bought a '96 Cruiser and it only came with one key which looks like it's a copy of a copy. Being a newb', I'm wondering if they came with wireless entry. I'm ASSuming that since these vehicles cost close to 40K new, that they would have come with the wireless key fobs. Am I correct in my ASSumption?

If so, I'm wondering if C'Dan can get these for us and I'm guessing I'd have to take it to the local dealer to code it to the vehicle...unless C'Dan can tell me how to do it...although he would probably have to kill me...:D

I hate knowing that there are origonal keys floating around out there somewhere...which could be a good excuse to by an alarm with remote start and ignition disable....yea...that's it. D**n it! Something else to add to the list.

Do you mean the fob seperate from the key? You can get these fropm Cdan and the3re are instructions on how to program them yourself on Slee's site in his tech section

There is also a vendor on here that sells them. I have seen their banner at the bottom of the page a few times.
But CDAN is guarantee to get you the right one and can answer any questions you might have.

Tom, tell us about your 96....bought stock or have somemods on it? PIcs, Pics, Pics the chant goes out!

Excellent...thanks fior the input...Yes the remote that is seperate from the key is what I'm looking for. I wonder if the origonal keys are available like on the newer vehicles...if you loose your keys. They usually give you a spare with a tag that has a number for a key replacement from the factory.

 OK...Not too many mods so far. Here's a recent pic. It was bone stock when I bought it. The pics I took when I first bought it are to high of a resolution to post. I've taken the running boards off and put Firestone Destination M/T's on it. Got a pretty good deal on them...bought 5 for $1,064 .00 with road hazard on them. They seem pretty quite...they're about as loud as the A/C running. It has e-lockers on it (Lucked out!).
Bought some new factory floor mats for it...the origonals almost had a hole wore through the drivers side. I think itt had a lot of highway miles on it. The front bumper is beat to a pulp with rock chips. The gas and brake pedals don't show hardly any wear on them at all.

The Firestones are 285/75/R16...

The second pic is a collection of parts I've been buying from C'Dan to base line it.
Front and rear axle service kits, heater hoses, PHH kit, radiator hoses, flush kit parts, fan belts...

Nice Truck!!

Also bought bras for the mirrors...they were pretty well beat up from all the highway driving. Front mud flaps from C'Dan (the man).

Here's the condition of the Birfs right now. I think they're (over)due...

Anyone know where the leak might be coming from in the third picture? It's right where the transmission meets the motor.

In case anyone is looking to replace the battery... I found that Odyssey Batteries (PC1200) will fit in place of a stock lead acid battery with the posts in the right orientation. http://www.odysseyfactory.com/ About $168.00 - $175.00 (yes, American)
I was looking at the Optimas but the posts are in the middle of the battery and the stock cables won't reach to the middle of the battery. I have no clue how old the interstate battery is that's in it and don't want to find that out when I'm camping at 10,000 feet...I would like to get away from the lead acid batteries anyway. A dual battery rig is on the wish list.

You can give yo0ur vin to a Toyota dealer and they can cut you new keys from that. At least I know Cdan can.

Thanks for the pics - looks great! That third picture you posted looked just like mine before I ended up replacing the rear main seal on it. While your at it have them do the axle reseal. Maybe cut you a break doing it all at once -doesnt hurt to ask.:D

BTW, where abouts are the pictures taken? Im curious....

I Read my reply and was probably setting myself up for an answer like "In my driveway..." Woops...I was referring to the huge mountain range behind your truck in pic #2. Nice view - Good wheeling close by looks like.

I'm in Colorado...yes, lots of wheeling close by and can't wait to get all of the PM done on my rig and take it out. Not to comfortable taking it out right now because of the condition of the Birf's as you could see in the pics. Also have some radiator hose leaks etc.

I have a 1997 GXR and it didn't come with keyless entry! Here in Kuwait you can actually go to a car accessories store and get keyless entry installed in your car and you will be given 2 keys just like the new 100 series cruisers!

I didn't see it mentioned but did you check to make sure you have the port installed security system in your rig? It "typically" is under the DS seat. I say typically because some have found the security system box in other locations (DS footwell wall, up under the dash, etc.) but I believe in most of those cases the security system proved to be a different (aftermarket) type.

If that is what you have then CDan can get you a new fob...ebay has a bazillion of them usually and if you are patient you can get a good used one for cheap. Pay CLOSE attention to the color of the remote though!! Don't waste your money on the aftermarket ones. BTDT and they wouldn't work on my '97 FZJ80 or '97 LX450.

Here are a couple threads that you might find useful. The second one has programming instructions and details about why the color of the remote is important ;)
