KDSS Valve not covered under Warranty

So Toyota finally got back to me. They verified the dealer talked to the local region expert and they stated this is a part that should never need adjusting. The warranty would cover if the KDSS had failed, but since the truck is level and the adjustment screws can't move, they don't see this an an issue as they state they should never need adjustment. If I need to adjust to add a lift that voids the warranty in any case.

I will likely use the liquid wrench method to loosen the screws and apply grease so the don't rust again, but in reality I should never need to adjust this since I have completed my build.

First world problems, as my daughter says

@Romer - Thank you for keeping the gang updated on the results. They do have a point but, would be great if they just took care of it. I mean, they acknowledged there is an issue.

I agree, it is a first world problem. Though, it is their flagship vehicle and it's not like there are millions on the road in the US, not to mention there's only a tiny subset that even knows what KDSS is and cares about this aspect of it.

I went to Autonation. They thought it was a warranty item. They ordered the part and started to install. They received a call from the Toyota Corporate FTS person to stop that the claim would not be Honored. I sent an e-mail to Toyota, but they have not responded as of yet. Do you have any contacts at Toyota I should reach out to?

Can you contact Ashcraft? I know he is not an FTS anymore, but he is a Denver Region District Manager last I heard.

He doesnt work for Toyota anymore. I talked to another friend who was Ben's boss and is now retired and didnt think there was anything to do

I still say it is BS. It is a part of the truck that should be serviceable and it is not. They should not be able to tell you that the screw is ok since you never have to losen it. It is designed to be loosened so it should work. I would ask them to show you how it gets loosened. Ask them to perform the steps from their service manual. Tell them you will pay for the labor to do it.

Christo,I don't disagree. The Dealer thought it was a warranty item. The Toyota corporate guy said no and they won't give out their name so I can discuss it. Customer service said once a Toyota Corporate person makes a call, there is nothing that can be done. I doubt that, just not a big enough deal to me to waste a lot of stress and aggravation on since Someone has demonstrated how to loosen them up and since mine is fairly new, it should work for me

I posted a thread on breaking mine loose - and mine looked bad! I had also opened a case file with Toyota corporate. Mine was a simpler case as I was out of warranty. But they were willing to offer me a rebate on a brand new Land Cruiser. I was amused that they would offer that with a straight face.

Just curious what your calling the "liquid wrench" method?

Separate question; what kind of metal is the KDSS valve made of? Does anyone know?

I think he means this stuff, or similar...

Can anyone confirm what the correct torque should be when tightening the shutter valves?

TIA

The valve body is cast iron or cast steel.

Shutter valves
With all wheels on the ground, tighten the shutter valves (E, F) of the stabilizer control with accumulator housing with a 5 mm socket hexagon wrench.

Torque:

14 N·m {140 kgf·cm, 10ft·lbf}

Thank you, sir!

I checked my valves a couple of days ago and they looked pretty much rusted shut... I wonder if I go in to Toyota to get front "OEM" spacers installed and they can't get the valves open would they replace it under warranty... I was going to take it to iron pig but I may just go this route since I don't think they can be open.

Try it and report back! Seriously that's a great idea if you ask me.

Why wouldn't Toyota install this inside the vehicle if they were going to use that easily corroded metal??? I think you should take pic along with everyone else and have them recall this since these rigs are not even 5 years old and progressively rusting!

I'd think if they made the valves from stainless steel. :bang::doh:

Problem is I'm afraid of the Toyota dealers near me and need to find a store that can ease my mind with touching that system. I was going to get spacers installed originally at Toyota but they were quoting me 10 hours of labor ($120 per) + replacing all kdss parts... I was born at night... But not last night:ban:
