I pick up this beauty on Tuesday from a CL find in CT. I have been looking for a long time and finally found the perfect match. It has 202000 miles and it's from AL and FL so there is no rust. It has a new radiator, exhaust, brakes, and tires. Looking forward to having this Land Cruiser for the long time.

Welcome! Any special plans for it?

Nothing for a little while. The wife was not to happy with the purchase. What are the typical mods for the 100's?

Running board delete (wife won't like that), bigger tires (either Nitto or BFG KO2) and adjust torsion bars on front to level the typical "rake" stance (higher rear). If you do nothing else, do the following....I can NOT emphasize the importance of this......replace the Heater T's now and baseline all fluids.

That is the Heater Thermostat? And could you please let me know what all the fluids there are to replace. Sorry this is the first LC i have owned.

No, not the thermostat. There are two plastic Tee's at the rear of the engine near the firewall that have your heater hoses (front and rear) attached. One of them (sometimes both) degrade over time and will literally crumble. If the plastic looks kind of brownish (instead of black) get it replaced NOW! Just do both of them. Hoses too IF they feel brittle or looked cracked.

If you think your Wife doesn't like the LC purchase now, just wait until a heater Tee breaks and leaves you stranded or worse.

Use the search function (heater tee's), there are lots of pics and instructions.

thanks for the info. I will take a look tonight.

The fluids I did were oil, transmission fluid, differential fluid, coolant, steering fluid and brake fluid. I have an LX470 so I also had to do the AHC fluid flush....you, thankfully, don't have to worry about that. The goal in baselining the fluids isn't necessarily to replace bad fluids (unless the previous owner didn't maintain well), but, to establish a definitive base timeline so that ongoing scheduled maintenance is much easier to schedule.

The heater t's are really just 2 plastic 3-way connectors located toward the firewall on the drivers side. They are usually replaced at the same time interval as the Timing Belt (every 90k). They do get overlooked, so it's just safer to replace them now. They are under $20 for both from any Toyota dealer. Very cheap insurance I say. If they rot and break (which they do), all your coolant goes bye-bye in a split second, you'll overheat before you know it and likely do big time damage to the engine.

Welcome to the club by the way. I just joined myself after nearly 4 months of research, following this forum and test driving. I'm already hooked and my wife is already calling my LX470 my mistress. She loves it too btw......and she HATES trucks.

Nice find! I second the heater T comment. I changed mine a while back (225k on my engine) and they both were failing and disintegrated upon removal. They are easy to replace and can be catastrophic if/when they fail. Replacing them once every 5-10 years is probably sufficient. I would also change out the coolant with Toyota Red if it's not already in the system.

I just did the heater T's and hoses on my '98 (with rear heater), replacing the plastic T's with stainless. After sifting through all the threads, the Google/eBay-friendly part numbers are:

- Stainless T's: Four Seasons 84543
- All six hoses: Toyota P/Ns: 87245-6A170 / 180 / 190 / 200 / 210 / 220

The above-quoted thread has a ton of other useful info too, read it through and you'll be all set!

Thanks I will.

I did not but only because I bought a 2000 LC about a month prior. If I hadn't I would have for sure. Are you local by chance?

Sounds like you may want to spend some time the the forum FAQs. They are loaded with valuable info on basics of the 100 series Land Cruiser, maintenance, mods, and problems/solutions. After you peruse those threads for a bit, you'll have a much better idea of what you and what the possibilities are. (Hint: An incredible vehicle and almost endless possibilities :bounce:).

100-series FAQ

One thing you'll find is differences of opinion (understatement) here on MUD. For example, I disagree with the post above recommending leveling the stance by adjusting the front torsion bars (the front "springs"). The factory stance is important to handling, especially when loaded, and leveling it will get you a squirrely handling truck. So I would not adjust the torsion bars. And, if the running boards are important to getting in/out for anyone in your family and you don't plan on climbing rocks with your truck, leave them on. They are handy for getting in and out!
