Does the AFI use an o2 sensor?
Cars that are running lean run hotter.
Maybe take the belt off and see if you can move the water pump freely. 🤷‍♂️

Still messing around with it, no solution yet.
I think it's not getting enough juice, so next is a FJ60 alternator.
Then maybe back to carb for simplicities sake.

But she still looks good.

It does use an O2. I replaced the AFI supplied one with a Bosch unit. No change. Yea....it's running lean and hot for some reason....still digging in.

Small update

Changed to a Denso O2 sensor, new fuel pump, and new GM Map sensor. Each of these was changed 1 at a time and no change.

It will sit and idle great all day. It'll rev up and down great when in neutral. No smoke, no weird smells, no odd noises.....sings like a sewing machine.

As soon as I put it in 1st gear and try to start going, it falls on its face. It'll stall out. When I try and get aggresive with the throttle, it'll backfire a bit through the TBI unit (no flames, just a 'pop'). It also gets up to temp quicker, and gets too hot, by feel and by the gauge. Once I do get going by giving it a lot of gas and feathering the clutch, it feels like I've got a 2000lb trailer behind me in each gear. It just won't go. Best I can tell its running lean under load and I don't know why. This just happend overnight about a year ago and it's strange.

I guess my next step is to check compression and timing, even though I haven't touched the distributor and it's tight.

Talked with AFI again...they recommend a new ignition module. We'll see. Throwing parts at it is something I guess.

Got to looking a bit deeper at the HEI distributor...and the oil leak is worse. Oil is working itself up the distributor shaft and making a mess. I only see 1 oring and a gasket. Is this correct? Oil is getting up into the distributor and wiring.... which is strange, but don't think that is causing my problems.

Does anything else look off? I'm going to try and install a new o ring and make a new gasket before I reinstall it, and change the ignition module.

Are you using the vacuum advance, and could you be using the wrong port and advancing too early?
