Single pully on water pump? Are you not concerned about belt contact for the pump.

Looks awesome.
This is not the right ps pump on the pics, this one is juste for testing, the right one is the original from Toyota.

The belt clear the water pum with the original one, it was like this for 4 years before the rebuilt.

Thanks for the comment!!

I am nearing the rebuild of mine. I have heard and read that shaving the head .030-.050 will result in power gains.
I don't recall shaving the head and block. is there an advantage to doing it this way? Or did the machine shop find something that led to this combination?

thanks, jay

The machine did it this way because of rust damage on the block that must need .020" of shaving.

Looking good

Any other work to the head, valves, valve springs or oiling mods?

Looks great - Let us know how it runs when you get it installed!

Curious about compression increase with this amount of shaving to the block and head. Will this increase the comp ratio enough for more power without requiring the use of higher (more expensive) octane gas?

BTW, looking good!!!

rebuilding 2F

Doing the same with my one. Get the head back next week. Getting it shaved, inlet and exhaust ports will be ported and polished, Electronic Dizzy going in, been told should make heaps more power.

The machine shop told me that the compression ration will be around 9.5:1 and need to run it on 92 octane gas.

2F

Our premium unleaded is 97 or 98 octane anyway isn't it??
An only about 5 - 8c p/litre more than standard. If it's not your daily driver, it's definitely worth the extra fuel expense for the power

I'm finding this thread very interesting. I have a 1971 FJ40 with the stock F engine still in it. It still runs real good, but I want to eventually make it a DD that will do better on highway. I have a 1978 FJ55 complete with 2F and drivetrain (body is shot) that I got to use for parts for the 40. Your rebuild sounds close to what I have been thinking of. I just don't like to jump into something w/o background knowledge. I also have a 97 Astro van with the Vortec 4.3 V6, currently with 200k on it and still going strong ( my wife's DD). My experience with the Vortec 4.3 and the 4L60E tranny makes it a strong contender for the 40, but good info on building the 2F and matching it up to an OD tranny could easily swing me that way since I like the low end torque that the 2F has.

Thanks for the info and keep posting about your build.

That's why i'll want to keep my 2F. But i had to say that i came close to do a V8 convertion

I'll continue to post some update when it will be all OK

2F or not 2F

Why did you decide to stick with the 2F and not a conversion? I am facing the same decision my self and have talked myself in and out of both options several times (74/40-F). Also what distributor is that and what is your carb?

I'll decide to keep the 2F , juste to make different, nearly all the FJ-40 owner that I know had make a V8 conversion, and like i said , i love the low-end torque of the 2F

For the distributor it's a GM HEI big cap from a 1976 Chevy Nova with a 250ci I6

The carb is still a Toyota one but whit some bigger jet, i dont want to put to much on this, because i'm thinking about a TBI conversion next winter!!

Finally i get it started, and it run very smoth, and it had a great sound with de Dynomax Ulta flo!! Very happy with the result for now!!:D

there is something about a bore with a fresh hone that gives me wood, Is that weird?
