You guys will have to let us know how it was with all of the red clay rally trucks there is supposed to be over 100 trucks traversing richland road and hurricane Creek this weekend.
Had a blast. Was never a dull moment and the weather was perfect. An awesome trip.

Somewhat pissed about the whole red clay rally. We did see maybe a handful of trucks which wasn't an issue until we came upon a section of the road that was clearly illegally made and they had stationed vehicles to score vehicles to use it. Basically a hill climb. I took a video of a Florida rig going up it. Somewhat sad. An event sponsored by a bunch of companies making use of an illegal trail in an area under pressure already to be shut down. WTF? Even better was noticing some idiot marked the entrance to HC on google maps and reviewed it.

But seeing this was the highlight of the trip.

My view every night was nice but the waterfall in the background made it perfect.

Ghost rider. Don't always expect the parking brake to hold on a 40 year old truck.

Can you see it?

That's what I was afraid of. Kelly really liked the trip the previous weekend and was upset the couple of times we saw trash on the trail. As we were driving we were talking about just going out by ourselves to clean up some areas on another weekend. That type of shenanigans will just get it shut down.

No caravan like last time?

No. The only two people who actually made the trip were Jim and Austin, but they both drove westward earlier in the week to visit friends/family.

If HC is ever shut down, these are the reasons. The Red Clay Rally website never mentions anything about treading lightly and I hope the video or pics find their way to the organizers (or maybe sponsors) Bold Overland and Overland Tennessee. If we can't police it amongst ourselves, someone will do it for us by shutting down access.

On a better note, it was a great trip with perfect weather and even a free late night concert (don't quit your day jobs fellas).

I was just looking that up too. Man that was irritating to see, but at least they were polite.

Grammar dude, grammar.

To echo Marshall's comments, had an epic weekend!! Thanks to everyone who came. I'm disappointed that we couldn't make it to the French Broad, but getting an earlier start would have given us enough time to take the paved roads up there. Oh well, still had a blast staying at Wolf Creek Falls.

I've got some good video, I'll get working on it and post up when it's done:

Ok wait a second,

They were doing a mock "hill climb" up a hill just for the hell of it and it wasn't clearly part of the trail?

That's SO not cool, I can't believe they would do tha!

Seems they are catching heat on Tacoma World for their antics.

I'm sure the organizers got permits with the GSM to have the event run through there. That whole thing seems sketchy to me. But that's a topic for another thread.

The few bad actors will screw it up for the rest. And we get a bad reputation even if you follow TREAD.

Anyway, who's green 80 has the busted driver side taillight?

That's @ceby . Carnage left over from GSMTR.

ceby, ping me if you want a replacement. I always bust my passenger side so have driver side available. Bought them in pairs from slovakia or sarajevo or someplace.

Red Clay Rally 2017

The road follows a clearly marked and well worn switchback. They were using a section that someone had made in the past to take out the switchback. The FS tank trapped it and over the years people started using it again wearing it down. But it was still a 5ft high tank trap. The spot was used as a bonus section from what we were led to believe. They had like 70 trucks come through there and I'm sure at least half of them tried it. There was zero tread lightly going on. It was a race up the 50 yard trail and back on the road.

I heard they were racing in Richland Gap and the police were involved. The campground they stayed at almost called the cops. In Tellico Plains a local blocked a bonus stage entrance. Basically it was a freaking race through land that already has a bullseye on it. They said it wasn't a race but in reality if you got slowed down by a group of Land Cruiser enthusiast who just happened to be on the trail trying to enjoy the ride then you were slowed down and had to make up the time. The guys we saw were just a few of the 70 trucks. Pretty sure that "Rally" pretty much sealed Richland Gaps fate.
