This is just crazy that these folks would allow this. They all need to heavily fined. Use the videos and pictures online to charge them. Unacceptable!! And unbelievable!!

Thats terrible, the kinds of videos opponents to what we do look for. I met with the director of training for TREAD Lightly earlier this year, she was adamant about not posting videos like that. Now, those are class 1 trails from NFS, not all are closed and can allow traffic on a case by case basis, so chance is they got permission, I don't think so since they drove like they wanted to destroy the trail. Class 1 have no maintenance and are temporarily closed. Either way, you should stay on the obstacle and not widen the trails if you get permission to go on those.
Damn!

So I posted up on the events Facebook page the video and my issues with what they were doing. I tried to give them the hint that HC currently has a bullseye on it and having a race there was a bad idea. As well the special points stage they were using in the video was illegal. The response was that they would move it out of the area next year and all the businesses in the area would lose thousands of dollars. A serious WTF moment. It's a very odd moment when I'm pissed about how someone else used a trail. And I'm basically helpless in doing anything about it for fear of making the bullseye larger.

Maybe their official sponsors would like to see some of the action shots? I recognize a few of them. I'm sure they would be happy to be associated with the participants

So maybe next year we pack in 5 LCs at the entrance and exit so no Red Clay Rally people can get in.....

I would like access to HC and Richland so I can take my daughter camping for years to come.

Seems like the people that did the Red Clay Rally should be mudding in a hay field instead.

Looks like @pkniland is asking the right questions on their thread.

I'm down with that!

For real, I can't express how mad I am about this...

Guess when you feel it's in your "back yard" it means more.

I can't believe Bold Overland even attached their name to it.

The organizers of the event seem to not care at all that participants didn't follow tread lightly principals. Does anyone if they are members of any national off road organizations or the SFWDA?

I've read a bit of the posts on several forums and it would seem that the general vibe is that this is no big deal. Several folks talking about blasting down trails and fire service roads is normal. Others complaining about trucks using low range etc. You can bet that the park rangers that had to talk to one of the guys running a check point has filed a report of some sort.

I do not think blocking the entrance to HC at an event like this would be wise. It would spill out onto Interstate 40 in a hurry and could easily cause an accident and cause injury to innocent travelers. That is a world of S&%$ none of us needs. It would also draw the press and that would be the end of it right there.

The sad part is, unless these folks have been in a cave the last 20 plus years, they have to have been exposed to Tread Lightly and similar programs. This issue has been in every magazine and forum dealing with OHV use. So the only conclusion a person can draw is that the offenders just don't give a damn. Mix them in with 60 plus trucks of people that actually do care and they all look guilty to an outside observer. I am not sure that I know how to deal with this level of ignorance other than for us to police ourselves better. But when the organizers fail to see an issue, it does not help. Whether you call it a race or not the participants were racing on public roads.

Anyone remember Tellico? Been there?

Just FYI, Danielle Fowles from Tread Lightly did share that the most difficult part on keeping trails open is people sharing videos or pictures of 4WD doing bad things like this. When they meet with land owners/managers, the upper hand goes to the tree huggers because they show these videos (many of them well intentioned). Most of the fight is in West, where apparently many trails are being shut down due to ignorant asshats like the ones you encountered.

Many of you know I am always preaching about training and education (I am on soap box now), but its the only way to get past the ingrained and learned behavior either passed down from others or just media driven crap.:bang:

This is her contact should anyone want to reach out. She is in our area sometimes to do Master Tread Training.

Just for the record....I wasn't being serious. Lol
