Does anyone know the right jump seat for an 82 FJ40? I bought a set that didn't have legs, only rubber bumpers. However, I've also seen pictures of the same size seat with legs. Since I could have an adult riding in the back, I want to make sure I don't strain the seat bolt mounts or inner fenders. I'm actually more worried about damaging something than having the right or wrong seat.

Early in the 78 model they had both bumper pads and legs. Before that only the bumper pads. After that only the folding leg.
Thanks. Do you know how important the legs are in later year models? I heard toyota stated using thinner gauge steel on later year models and am afraid of deforming the beet metal.

the later the jump seats, the better structurally designed. period. they went through many revisions from 73 through 79, maybe 80. are yours gray or black? gray is 79(or 80?) and later. if you arent concerned with having seats that match the year of your 40, you want 78 or later, something with the drop down leg.

i just saw your other post, 78's should have a leg. they tend to break easily without them.

I've never had a issue with the shorter non folding leg seat breaking. The longer jump seats that ended with the 74 model with a roll bar in this country had more problem bending at the bumper because it could seat two but still just had the two bumpers. 79 is when the seat when to a lighter grey.

If I had to choose I would use the early 78 because they support the back at the edge of the wheel well and the folding leg on the floor.

From what I've seen, the later years rear seat fold down bracket is narrower and folds down from the seat differently. You can see the difference from the pictures above.

I don't have a rear mat in the cargo area on my '82. The legs are trying to rub the liner off of the floor, but so far the liner is holding up.

My July, '78 has folding legs - earlier ones have the bumpers and no leg, and tend to bend under the weight of plump Americans. You want gray, '79-83 style seats for your truck, if you can find them.

cruiser parts has an interesting list:
Jump Seat FAQ:

There are 6 total different jump seats.
#1 - 1963 - 1969, long style with 2 bolt holes per a leg
#2 - 1970 - 1973, long style with 1 bolt hole per a leg.
#3 - 1973 - 1975, Short style for roll bar, bad tendency to brake at joints.
#4 - 1976 - 1977, Short style, for roll bar, slightly better bumper design. Still breaks easily
#5 - 1978, short style, excellent for all earlier years, black and has a fold down support leg.
#6 - 1979-1981, short style, It is a bit updated from the 78 style. Steel bottom plate is at edge instead of inset.
#7 - 1982-1985 short style, updated and a smaller fold down leg.

FYI

my Nov 78(round bezel) has the small seats with legs, no bumper pads, fairly certain they are original to the 40.

SOR shows the bumpers pads up thru 4/78. Depending on when the fold leg start if it wasn't at the started of the 78 model the pads and leg could have been on a very short time together. To be honest I can not remember when or where I picked up the set I have. Possible from a junk yard but not a cruiser I owned.

Fast Eddy's is Feb. '78, mine is Dec. '77...like him, I have the bumpers with no legs. I have never had an issue with these jump seats, but then, I've never had 200+ pound folks riding back there ;)

I'm sure the legs add some strength, but I like the bumper ones, they work for me.

My seats had been stood-on, and the metal where the bumpers are was pushed in, causing the seats to droop down. I just pulled the covers and banged the metal down into place. The metal is fairly thick and has held up to light sitting-on since then.

So based on the pictures of mine they are a 79 and up. I bought them a few years ago from someone on Mud for a 1970 FJ40 I had at the time. Now I’m replacing the ones that were in a 74 with the fold down legs.
And no I don’t have the original ones out of my 74. I sold them about 4 years ago.
