Does anyone know what causes, and more importantly, how to silence, the jet turbine whine I hear under accelration? I can't be the only one with this problem but I don't see many threads about it and it's driving me crazy. :bang:

Its from the small resonator on the exaust. Ive read that none of the aftermarket systems make that noise. Not sure whatll happen if you just cut off the resonator. A bus load of nuns may be in danger :)

Yep I turbo'd my 80 this way. Resonator long gone.

Search the whistle. It has been discussed in excess before.

When I was a kid I put baseball cards on my bicycle so they would slap the spokes, now I got a Faux jet assist/turbo. I like it.

Thanks for posting this up. I have been trying to figure out the whistle. I have been searching for "whine" and never came up with anything.

It is from the exhaust, there are a couple step downs that create the whistling you hear. You have 3 options:

1.) Replace the exhaust
2.) Turn up the stereo
3.) pretend you have a turbo and drive faster ;)

I use option 3 on the LX. For some reason my LC doesn't make the noise so it seems slower.:p:D

I dont have a pic of it but you can see it sticking out behind my rear tire in this one

It isn't the resonator, I cut mine off and the whistle is still there, but the exhaust is louder so you can't hear it as easily. It is in the exhaust, there is a step down, between tubing sizes, I don't remember exactly where. I would have to look it up.

10 years ago mine used to whistle, it slowly got quieter over the years and is now gone, no exhaust changes, I kinda miss it.

There are kits out there to add the whistle to your exhaust. The Cruiser whistle is so cool others are copying it.

Cutting off the resonator will make it worse or better depending on point of view. I'm pretty sure it happens in muffler. So if you don't want it change the muffler.

I've seen Flowmaster 50 series replacement mufflers posted, does anyone know which model fits the LX 450 without too much modification?

May u can help me im new to this how do i post my problem?

No prob. Just choose the forum to post in and at the top of the forum post window, choose a button that says Forum Tools, I believe, and you'll see a 'Post New Thread' option. I'm on the iPhone app right now so this is from memory.

Here's a new one. I replaced the Idler pulley for the Alternator belts when I noticed it was frozen solid. The belts were just sliding past and apparently causing the howling sound. Must have resonated like a Tibettan Bowl or Crystal Goblet. Replaced the pulley and now the jet whine is gone. Keeping my fingers crossed. It's amazing the layers of noises that disappear as I repair things.

Interesting find.
