regarding the cloth material

Having a senior moment.

I have 6 of these, I know 2 go under the radiator core support.

Where do the other 4 go?

I took my bib off the other day and found another one under the bib hinge. It looks larger though.

Has anyone found a source or alternate for these, the ones under my running boards are mush? Does anyone know why they used cloth instead of rubber?

Matt, you should be getting a smoking deal on that body for the amount of advertising the Aqualu is getting.

It's looking good, keep at it.

Just out of curiosity...what the hell does this do on a troopy?

decrease's brake fluid pressure to the rear axle if it's unloaded increases when you load it.......

interesting... is it adjustable in any way? To account for an aluminum tub and/ or aftermarket suspension height?

Maybe loose it and put in a valve?

Matt,

Toyota calls this an LSVP. Load Sensing Proportioning Valve.

If the back end sags under load it increases the brakepressure to the rear brakes. There is some adjustability in the rod, but make sure it's not going to "over"brake the rear by making the connecting rod longer. Going sideways on the freeway is not funny at all. Trust me on this...

I tossed mine out and put a Wilwood proportioning valve right next to the master cylinder. Single line to the rear brakes and better braking. Adjust once and be done with it.
KISS principle. Keep it stupid simple.

BTW. The tub is looking nice!

adjustable here (in red) and by bending rod. pretty much more useless crap

Had a bit of a late night last night...or morning I should say. Body shipped from Aqualu last Wed. and arrived at the terminal in Winnipeg, MB (Canada) Saturday night. I got a hold of the trucking company yesterday evening and they said I could pick up the body as ealier as 3 am when the dock workers showed up. So my neighbor and I, who also bought a 79 and new tub for the 81 FJ40 he bought from me, hooked up the trailer and headed north.

Since I live in God's country the border crossing 9 miles north of me closes at midnight. We crossed the border around 10:30 pm last night, rolled into Winnipeg around 1 am. Found the terminal, hung out for a little bit, dock workers started showing up around 2:30 a.m. and were extremely helpful getting it loaded.

Left the terminal at about 4:30 am, crossed back into the U.S. around 6:45 and back into my driveway around 7 am. At work now and tired would be an understatement.

Hoping to get it unloaded tonight and open up the crate to check it out! :)

aw ya poor bastard, not being able to open up the case and see your shiny new body before going to work.

I hope work isn't going too slow!

Looks like a nice crating job.

Shame to bust it all up.

I hope you got lucky on the exchange rate when you paid for it. The dollar has fluctuated by several cents over the past few months. Might have be able to save enough to pay your gas to Winterpeg.

They used the same crate I sent the steel tub in, I figured they would so I built it fairly sturdy. It held up pretty well considering the mileage that thing has on it. I'm sure it was transferred at least a half a dozen times at cross dock terminals along the way. Couple of the castors I used got bent up pretty good, but I think some damage is to be expected.

That crate will be cut up and ready for BTU's this evening. ;p

Sweet! Looking forward to the rest of the build, be sure to post up what products you seal/paint/line it with ... I've got one of these tubs stashed in the garage as well ;) Maybe this thread will get me motivated :D

Not a ton of time tonight, and I was tired, but I managed to spend a couple hours and get the troopy body unloaded and un-crated.

I spent a few minutes looking over the body, my first impression: Stouter than I thought it would be? I guess I'm used to thin sheet metal and this thing is pretty thick, which is a good thing.

Anyway, must sleep now. :)

alternative (cheap too)

I made some mounts out of bias tire sidewalls and tread but I believe that radial tires have polyester/nylon in the sidewalls too. I used some really old and bald tires. I cut them out in strips with a skilsaw and then shaped with a very course grit on a sander. Punched a hole with a home made punch out. conveyor belting would work too.

I took my bib off the other day and found another one under the bib hinge. It looks larger though.

Got some time this afternoon and managed to get the body on. Couple issues I've noticed so far, but nothing suprising since I'm dealing with 2 aftermarket products...tub and header.

Took a pic, body needs to come over to the right on the front about 3/8 to 1/2". As you can see, the aftermarket header is hitting the aftermarket tub on the firewall. Nothing that can't be overcome, but kinda wishing I didn't have that header jet hot coated now? There may have to be some cutting and re-welding of that rear pipe.

The tub may be an option to notch out in that area, but I really would like to see the gas pedal and linkage instaled first, since that is right in that area. That comes to another question:

Any of the Europe or middle east guys have a pic of the accelerator assembly from the firewall to the carb on a 2H diesel? And then I may ask you if you know of any of those that can be parted out?

thanks in advance.

Linkage

G'day Matt,

Looks great! As I recall, the 2H is a cable, not linkage. It should be as simple as getting an older LHD accelerator from a cable accelerator rig and hooking it up.

Pity about those headers... turbo, anyone? Good excuse to make a new manifold to fit the turbo. I understand the turbo from the Saab 900 works perfectly.... Dan? Help me out here.

You read my mind. Turbo Matt. If you're going to be messing with the exhaust again, at a few hundred bucks a turbo will both wake the engine up, AND solve your clearance problem. Plus, the turbo whine is worth at least $100 every time you hear it. :)

Yes, the 2H should be cable, AFAIK. On the 40, to convert to cable I used a Lokar cable and modified the gas pedal to accept it. Super easy--just takes a drill..

Got a little quality time on the troopy today. Took the header off so I could move the body over to center it on the frame. After a lot of looking and measuring I finally started drilling some holes. I got all 4 corners bolted down, everything lined up pretty good. One problem I encountered was the the bottom of the tub was sittiing on a buck rivet on the frame at the high pioint above the rear wheel. I am going to look for a pic of how this was stock, I know it was close before. There were a couple pads on each side of the highpoint in the frame. I ended up taking the body off and drilling out that buck rivet on each side. After re-installing the body I bolted everythinng back up. I put a thin piece of rubber between frame and body, essentially this would be very similiar to what was there and how it rode on the frame before. Like I said...I will try to find a stock pic of that area so you can see what I am talking about.

I ended bolting the aprons and bib back up to make sure everything lined up in the front. Everything was pretty close, pretty happy with how it's looking right now. Still might need some minor massaging to get everything in place, but pretty decent. Bolted the windshield frame up as well.

I think the next step is to keep bolting up the other 10 body mounts. Most of the body mounts might have to be turned down in the lathe about an 1/8" or so, but I think something like that was to be expected. Once that body is bolted in place then start bolting the hard top on and fitting doors.
