We made it to Arkansas to pickup our 1982 FJ40 Cruiser on Wednesday. It was as represented. The body and interior are eye candy. There is an oil sticker dated 1993 that says change the oil at 91K. With 106K on the clock that means it was driven 13K miles in the last 24 years! Talk about a garage queen! 2nd owner repainted in 2006 on a solid one owner Cruiser. My magnet couldn't find any bondo in the usual places. A couple of rust eruptions in the back floor. Light surface rust underneath.
The oil pan gasket is leaking and the brake booster is shot. It drove like a Cruiser. Brakes don't pull left or right. Front end drifts to the right a bit with hands off. Tires are totally aged out. Plugs were dry and really carbon coated. Needs tune up, radiator flush and all of the above fixed or replaced. Started up without hesitation.
NOW, for the thread title! We've owned this baby less than 48 hours. This morning, we are gassing up at the Arkansas/ Missouri line. The Cruiser is on the trailer, and I'm putting gas in the F150. The wife comes out of the store from a bathroom break with a big grin on her face. She said, "It just happened." She says a guy in the store says, "Nice Jeep, what year is it?" She says gruffly , "1982, It's a Land Cruiser, not a Jeep." It brought back a flood of memories from owning a 1978 FJ40 for 20 years. Can't count the number of times we said, "It's not a Jeep!"
We check in to the hotel in Garden City, KS this evening. Before we could finish, a guy says, "Nice Jeep, did you restore it?" We smile at each other and answer in unison, "It's not a Jeep, It's a Toyota Land Cruiser!" The guy look puzzled and walks off. We give each other a high five.
We'll keep you posted on getting this garage queen back on the road.
