I've lost some steam painting in my garage. I figured now is a good time to update the how much, how to, don't do and must do...... in other words, what I've learned.
I would edit my post, but I can't for some reason. The quote I had for the toner (32oz) was wrong. They quoted me a regular 32oz can of toner that includes binder. Apparently for every 32 oz of toner there is 16 oz of binders??? So my cost doubled - $213 was the cost of 32oz of 6v7. If you want an exact match to the color you choose via the paint code, you will need more than 8oz of toner per 1 gallon of Al's.
I used all 4 gallons of Al's, I'm not sure how anyone got through a whole 80 with just 2. The hood, roof and upper valance took 1 gallon and still needed a 2nd coat.
I was lucky enough to have 2 guns w/ hoppers while doing this. 1 gun was from a past Al's kit I purchased and the other from HF. They are almost identical, but 1 very big difference. The tips are different, the HF gun has only one hole in the tip where the Al's gun has 5. The Al's gun allows for larger coverage area and a finer texture.
Over-spray - although we taped and masked, taped and masked.... I still have to deal with it. I learned that lacquer thinner works great for spot cleaning this gnarly stuff. If you don't want to deal with cleaning over spray, tape what you don't want to clean, it will save you lots of scrubbing.
Paint inside. I had the option to wait for a job to finish then use a giant shop. I should have waited, but was occupying other peoples time, I felt obligated to get to work.
Eat after you finish. We had a bit of a carne asada parrrtay, uh hem, if you will. It was really hard to get back to work after a full stomach and a cold beer, but we pressed on.
