I reinstalled my Powertrax locker according to instructions and I'm not sure if I've got it right or not. I put my new wheels and tires on yesterday (WOW what a difference), and was able to torque the left (drivers side) wheel in the air without any slip. When I jacked up the passenger side, closest to the diff, It moved with a rachet movement. Is that normal slip? It did move both ways if I recall correctly.

Anyone here use a powertrax? This is a ratchet style locker made by Richmond gear. With both axles up off the ground I tested to see if both spun each other in the same direction, but I did not have the driveshafts on at the time! I wonder if I'm looking at doing that damn thing over again. what a PITA!

Thanks Ken

I wouldn't worry about it.

The way to check is to have the rear up in the air, drive shaft locked (in gear), and then spply pressure to one wheel in one direction, and attempt to spin the other wheel in the opposite direction.

when they are sitting "free" they will ratchet. It's the pressure in the opposite direction that makes them lock.

A simple test, without jacking up -- Go around a turn. If you "coast" there should be no chirping. If you apply the gas, you should lock up ("chirp").

Do you still have the installation manual?

The Powertrax manual has the test instructions. With the wheels in the air and the tranny in gear, if you hold one wheel tight in one direction, the opposite side will ratchet in the OPPOSITE direction and LOCK in the same direction. Repeat test for both wheels and both directions.

If a wheel is always locked or a wheel ratchets in both directions there is a problem with the setup or the locker.

get on s slippery surface ie snow and punch it, if you spin out and have tourble controlling the tail end then its working
