Is it possible to retrofit OEM keyless entry in a 2002 4runner?

Is it possible?... Yes... how much work is the real question. If you already have power locks and just not remote it might not be too much trouble. But aftermarket would probably be a lot easier and have more options.

The easiest route that I know of (assuming you don't have a donor vehicle) would be: buy an aftermarket keyless entry or remote start kit that can use the factory fob. Downside to the factory fob would be the poor factory transmitter range.

There are different Body ECUs for SR5 or Limited, as well as a different Back Door ECU with & without keyless entry. It looks like the wiring harnesses may be different as well.

You would think it's a simple matter of plug & play, but that rarely works with the different build specs. About the only place I've seen it work is with Cruise Control. Some that come without the system only need a switch, and sometimes a computer "switch" turned on.

I thought most 4runners in that year had keyless entry from the dealer though.

X2

After I bought my 99 a friend at a Toyota dealer ran the CarFax and build sheet for me. The build sheet not only told me the day it was built but which shift. Included what was factory installed and what was port installed. I would see if a dealer could check to see if it did have keyless entry and a PO just lost the remotes. Mine is a SR5 that did not have the remote built into the key but rather just steel key and separate remote. Been told this style is cheaper to deal with. Remotes are cheap and don't believe it has the master like the remote in the key. My 99 owner's manual shows both styles. Not sure if they was still the case in 2002. My biggest problem is getting it into program mode. Mine has Toyota's VIP security port installed and can't get to go into program mode. Remotes are dirt cheap on eBay. When I messaged the seller to see if they knew of any problems related to VIP security they just sent me a second remote with the same instructions.:bang:
