Was wondering if i could get a little help in which direction to head in from here w/ my 55. It has developed a motor issue with what i believe to be the original 72 F. Here is a video to try and give you an idea of whats happening.

I took the pig on a bit more of an adventure than she was ready for about a year ago. On the trip the clutch failed and it developed a small knocking sound coinciding w/ RPM. I thought maybe the knock was associated w/ the clutch or bolt in pressure plate backing out, but after a clutch replacement it is still present. It is not obvious when you remove the rear drive shaft which let me to believe it was in the bugger welded rear end. However after inspecting diff, tcase and tranny visually i saw nothing obviously broken or missing.

I decided to take it on a short wheeling trip last weekend. Checked oil and coolant and aired up and hit the road. It drove fine, actually better and better for an hour to the trails. It then sat for 45min as i aired down, bought my trail pass and a lil lunch, admired the other trucks, etc. Cranked right up, locked the hubs and pulled out. Immediately upon leaving the parking lot im met w/ a horrible squeel and shudder followed by a LOUD knocking noise from what appeared to be the engine bay area.
I first thought it to be the locking hubs or something b/c that was the only real effective change since the drive down and the noise was up front. NOT the case. Unlocked hubs and turned around to call the rollback. HERE is the odd part. It starts and runs fine in the senses it doesnt try to die, and idles evenly, and no smoke whatsoever. It does however sound like a gnome w/ a hammer inside the motor
I have drained the motor oil and there were no large metal pieces present. I was about one quart shy, but i noticed more than normal blow back on bottom of drivetrain. Only the typical shaving film on the magnet.
I removed the water pump following a glimpse of hope that the motor wasnt toast from another thread. It is operational and quiet as can be.
I have the valve cover off now, wondering to go further, but would like soem suggestions of what i might be in for, or which direction to start digging.
Other observations are accumulated oil on pass. side of motor around the dip stick and dizzy. Ive read about the common issue of oil coming up the dipstick but have not done the fix. I do suspect this for this wetness. I read about oil pumps instead and the freak case of it coming up and forcing dizzy up. My distributor is clamped solid and does not move or spin at all.

I have a 77 2f in unkown condition
i can source a running 2f that 'smokes a little' for cheap
??? other suggestions
