Hey y'all!

I'm a newbie to this cruiser thing and I'm ready to get started. I live in Williamston, SC and have been addicted to cruisers for several years. When I saw one on the road I yelled,

"CRUISER, CRUISER, CRUISER!!!"

at the top of my lungs until the wife finally said it would be ok to buy one. This took no less than three years. Now, because of the fruits of my labor, the wife is driving our new purchase-a 2000 LC. "Are you happy now? You've got your d@*n cruiser," says the wife. "No, you're driving my cruiser." So now I yell,

"OLD CRUISER, OLD CRUISER, OLD CRUISER!!!"

Well,

IT WORKED! I now have permission to sell my Tacoma and find a cruiser. I'm thinking an 80. But, I've found a pretty sweet 62 that needs the engine rebuilt (and the owner gave me dibs). Decisions, decisions...

I've been reading your threads for a while trying to get some ideas. I feel like y'all have helped me out mucho grande already. I'll try not to take so long from now on. I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you (I'll be joining UC soon).

Welcome to UC. I'm in your boat, wife said it was OK, when you get money, and it's tough saving enough pennies to pay for a Cruiser. Good Luck!

If you want an "OLD CRUISER" go with a 60 or 62 but unless the one you are looking at is a STEAL I would hold out for one that has a decent motor. I've seen them with decent miles in good/fair shape for 4k or less easy. If it is going to be your DD you could spend 5k and be pretty good off.

On the other hand 80's are really coming down in price and its nice to have a sweet cushy ride on the way home from the trails. Built 80's can be found for 10k or less and unbuilt w/ factory lockers for around 7k give or take.

I'm pretty new and in the process of building a 55. Many guys on the forum know Cruisers MUCH better than I do and will pipe up shortly.

If it was me I would go with an 80 specifically an FZJ80 93-97............. in my mind you can't beat the all round aspect of the 80's. They by far have the most stout drivetrains for landcruisers offered in the US. Factory lockers is a great thing......... basically you can drive these things the 100+ miles that most of our wheeling oppurtunitys are located away wheel the snot out of them and then cruiser 80 mph the whole way home. Don't get me wrong I love my 62 but the 3fe engine is a dog and they are much more prone to rust than the FZJ 80's ........... to me the 80 is just a much more superior wagon

Are you wanting a Cruiser for a DD, trail and DD, or just trail?

You can find 80's for close to $5K if you are patient and dont mind a few quirks and doing a little work.

I think 80's are great, but they just dont give off the look of a 60 or 62...that classic wagon style. You have to decide which you want, by doing tons and tons of reasearch. I woudl suggest here and even seeing if some fellow club members can help you look over the truck as well.

I'll tell ya, if I could find a 62 (looks) with all the benefits of an 80 (everything else)...long pause and a pouty sigh...no need to go there.

Yeah, the 80 seems to be the way to go. I'll start the search. In the mean time, if you know someone who's interested in a Tacoma send them my way.

Just go ahead and get the 80, so you can start drooling and searching for a 40. The "real"cruisers. Ha, ha. Good luck with your search. I am looking for something similar. Be patient, there are some great rigs out there. Yours will pop up in time.

one thing a 60/62 will always have over an 80 is character. pick up your skirt, grab your balls and go buy a 60. :grinpimp:

in all honesty though, a 60 with *some* 80 features is ideal, which is why I am putting coils under my 60.

wait a minute there borther, I may have come to respect the DD/wheeler duality of the 80 but you don't see me showing up at the trail heads with no stinking 80............. heck I am getting ready to put the FJ62 up for sale and that will leave me with my raw mechanical 1962 FJ40 as my only wheeler.......... so don't worry I am not getting soft, my 40 doesn't have a A/C, or a radio; hell it doesn't even have seat belts or a roll bar

........ who's getting soft now mr. 60 series :D
 
80s rock!....as I go downstairs to pull my front diff and replace the ring and pinion....doh!

It'll have to do both. Otherwise, I have to keep the wife's college car.:mad: If I do that, I could go for a trail only rig.
