I rebuilt a 1979 Toyota FJ40 power steering box today for a friend. It was an exercise in persistence, patience, and attention to detail. It is as good as new... I hope!!

Here are some "before" pics.

I used a rebuild kit from Cruiser Corps

My wife was not too happy about the smell, but I appreciated the air conditioning.

I could not find a good video for an FJ40, so I used a video from YouTube where a guy rebuilt a box for an FJ80. There were a few differences, but it was close enough.

Here are all the old seals. It was definitely due for a rebuild. Here are all the old seals. It was leaking from everywhere. Probably because the PO put on a header and deleted the heat shield. The box would cook every time you drove it.

Replacement power steering heat shields are hard to find. I was able to find a non-power steering shield and bent the brackets to fit. I've seen some cool "one-off" fabricated shields. I thought about doing that, but this was quick and easy.

I am also going to wrap the headers in fiberglass wrapping to try to keep the box from cooking again.

You didn’t replace any of the needle bearings?
No, just the seals. It worked great before the rebuild, just leaked really bad.
