I have a complete OEM power steering setup from a 1979 FJ40. If I want to add it to a 1983 FJ40 my understanding is I must cut the steering shaft. Instead of cutting steering shaft can I by an after market mounting cradle for the gearbox (JT outfitters, Georg) and use the steering column without cutting. I realize this will not be a collapsable steering column.
Thanks!

I would fit it all up and not worry about shortening the steering shaft until you see no other way to make it work. There is a bit of wiggle room in the whole setup. I know people who have also just spaced the steering column off the floor a bit to make room for the longer steering shaft.

Maybe I'm having very senior moment, but I don't recall a factory power steering option on a '79 Cruzzer.

Power steering became an option on the 40 series 1/79.

Believe this pedestal is for using mini truck power steering on a 40 series. Made to change the angle of the steering box not the spacing of the steering column.

I'm in a similar boat. I have a '79 engine/PS setup, but a '76 frame/non-PS mount. Do I need to change the mount to get the OEM PS to work properly?

It’s the same frame mount.

Good summary on steering shaft differences in this old post:

why not just shorten the collapsable section of the steering shaft, cut it, drill hole, install dowel pin
and as stated above 40 mounts are the same, mini truck mount has a different angle

This is the reason I picked up a couple of US model 8/80+ steering columns. As I remember it's 30MM that needs to be cut off the lower shaft.
Installing this in 9/72-7/80 requires a different opening at the firewall. Same with non collapsible on 8/80+. Earlier ones used a different pedestal. The piece that bolts to bottom dash is attached to the steering column and beefed up compared to non collapsible column.

It really wasn't clear in earlier posts but steering box pedestal 9/72 on never changed in any style non collapsible and collapsible columns.
