4.88's in my 80.

I have been vacillating about this for a year, with the price of gas, putting more money into my fuel guzzling 80...

Anyone want to talk me out of it?

C'mon...I dare ya!

4.88s are just fine. With all that I've done offroad I don't use 1st gear in low as it is. Actually that's not true, I lost my brakes on a mountain and used 1st to get me down safely. Unless you are rock crawling I think 5.29s are over kill and impede 85mph on the highway.

Pfffft.... All the cool kids are running 5.29s. I even got mine heat treated!

That is the idea I got from Kurt at C.O. I am really trying to strike a happy medium.

Just can't take 30 mph up hills while fully loaded.

Aren't you Mr. Special.

I have had them well over 2 years....the skinny peddle is much more fun! I run 315's and she surely has more pep than stock. I get about 10 mpg around town.

[I have 4.88's and wouldn't want to be stock geared again. Highway I can still run 75~80/QUOTE]

With 4.88 gearing and runs at 75-80 MPH, what is your RPM?

Seen this thread come to my mind a doubt ..

I'm already clear con my mind with 4.88 but ..

With 315 and 4.88 you get more pep than stock gears and stock tires . ?

Numbers claims to get back to stock gearing or at least close .. but it's really as is . ?

Yes, that is known as "seat of the wallet performance" :D

with 315s, 4.56 gears get you back to stock. 4.88s are like 8% under.

I'm going 4.88. You guys talked me into it.

:D

I just ordered the gears. Sierra 4.88. W/ full insall kits.

On my way.

I have been running my 4.88's for a little over a month now. I didn't notice that much difference in town, but definetly a difference pulling long steep hills at hwy speeds. The biggest difference was offroad though. Wheeling up in Cullowhee a couple of weekends ago I was blown away at the difference at crawling and the engine braking. If you are planning on maybe going to 37's or you don't do much hwy driving I don't see anything wrong with the 5.29's otherwise stick with the 4.88's. My 2 cents
