Try the old test for a blocked radiator. Get the engine nice and hot. Then lightly spray cold water onto the rad. The water should evaporate evenly. If some water lingers longer , it may be because the rad cores are blocked in that area.
A heat gun sensor thingy would tell you the same thing.
The rad is 28 years old, it will almost certainly have a some gunk inside. To get the best out of them ,they need to be opened up and the cores rodded. A pressure clean will only remove what loose
Try a new radiator cap, they often work wonders. But I suspect that it will be 2-3 small problems that need to be eliminated.
You may need a new thermostat also
The overflow bottle and cap doesnt really have much to do with the overheating in the engine. Its just a place for coolant to be stored when the pressure forces it out and contraction sucks it back in later . I suspect your rad cap spring has lost its tension and is opening too early.
