Try the old test for a blocked radiator. Get the engine nice and hot. Then lightly spray cold water onto the rad. The water should evaporate evenly. If some water lingers longer , it may be because the rad cores are blocked in that area.
A heat gun sensor thingy would tell you the same thing.

The rad is 28 years old, it will almost certainly have a some gunk inside. To get the best out of them ,they need to be opened up and the cores rodded. A pressure clean will only remove what loose
Try a new radiator cap, they often work wonders. But I suspect that it will be 2-3 small problems that need to be eliminated.
You may need a new thermostat also

The overflow bottle and cap doesnt really have much to do with the overheating in the engine. Its just a place for coolant to be stored when the pressure forces it out and contraction sucks it back in later . I suspect your rad cap spring has lost its tension and is opening too early.

Wow...I thought Garnin corp was a honest seller. Sorry the odometer was rolled back. :(

For the record, I used www.carvx.jp before I bought my PZJ70 which is kinda like carfax but also provided me with the auction sheet as well.

Interesting .... that site says my 77 is an LX with a manual. It is a ZX with an auto ....

The info I got was spot on for my PZJ70 and provided the auction sheet with pictures. It took them about a day to compile all the info which included all the recalls it had in Japan.

Perhaps it is not always accurate though. :meh:

Hello,

Just out of curiosity: is this guy Garanin Russian? His accent and looks made me think that. I might be wrong, hence the question.

Juan

thanks again rosco. I will spray it and see what happens. good thought. I put in a new thermostat but haven't driven it hard to see what happens yet. the old one opened up when I put it in hot water though. may have been sticking off and on. and this rig sat up for 2 years so that may affect it somehow. I kinda think it may be 2-3 small problems too. I don't think the motor has big issues as it used no oil in 1200 miles and I got about 19.8 mpg with 33 inch tires and joe k said with 33 inch tires I was getting better than that. shop guy said $160-260 to get it rodded out so if it came to that I may as well get a new one. will try to find a radiator cap. I need a good service manual also. any idea on those? this thing looks more complicated than the 74 fj40 I used to have. I could work on it ok but this diesel will be a learning deal for sure. quite a few sensors and stuff. hope I can pick it up ok, especially if im on the trail somewhere and something happens. seems like everyone says they are pretty bulletproof though. joe said if I did have to order something, get on ebay in Australia, or dealers here, but cant remember if he said aftermarket was ok or just buy oem. think I saw where George at valley hybrids may have parts for these too. i'll try not to throw a lot of money at it too. easy to do sometimes. appreciate it man.

1HZ are the most bullet proof engine in the Landcruiser(and Coaster) range. You can find and download free 1HZ manuals on Utorrent.
The radiator cap maybe the same as a FJ60 in size, not sure about the PSI.
Ive had good luck with aftermarket parts in Australia. Because of the sheer volume, the parts dealers learn pretty quick whats no good. But also because online OEM parts have become very competitive in recent years, they are still in the race. Its just a matter of research.
I doubt you are going to have any serious problems , mine is at 290 000 klms and it runs perfect.

I thought you might like this series of 1HZ vs Landrover 300TDI engines. I havent watched it all, he makes the odd error but does a good job for a landrover owner. It has 14 episodes (eps 1 is missing)
Lots of good basic info

hey guys- didn't check emails yesterday so just saw this. first, thanks so much for all the advice. super great site. and fj73, I know tony or someone rolled the odometer back 100000 km but other than that I am hoping I still have a good truck. he seems honest to me also, like he gave me a big box of OEM parts, probably at least $1000 worth that he didn't have to do. and he fixed my AC and made sure it was done right. I hate to say anything bad about someone without being sure of it. am going to do a compression test and see how that goes. if its messed up, I will surely say something then. it runs good but I never owned a diesel so I don't really know. and yes, he is a Russian guy and seems to be super particular about what he sells, pointing out every possible defect. and thanks a lot roscoe for the videos and info. haven't had time to watch them yet but I will. like I say, he wasn't straight up about the mileage but hopefully he was with the rest of it. besides that, he seemed honest to me. hope im right. and thanks a lot guys. I will keep you posted.

Have you talked to the seller since the discrepancy was discovered? At a minimum a partial refund should be offered.

hi everyone. yeah roscoe, I would have thought it was the dealers who rolled it back too. I don't know, maybe tony from garanin bought it from whoever bought it from japan. I hope it was only rolled back 100000 km. and I haven't talked to him about the odometer yet. I do know that he had an old man emu reverse shackle lift done [2-1/2 inches I think] with all new springs, nitro shocks, I think a sway bar, plus he rebuilt the front axle. I saw pictures from the shop with it on the lift rack and it had yellow curtains and mine has yellow curtains so pretty sure its the same one. plus all new disc brake calipers off an 80 series he thought and stainless brake lines. looked like it was professionally done and it sat real level. said he had a lot of money in that. also the front axle was rebuilt. could see pics of that too. and when I was changing the diff fluids I noticed someone has been into the transfer case too as there was small amount of red silicone showing at all the gaskets. don't know what that was about but it shifts well and goes good in 4wd with no weird noises. maybe I lucked out and got a rebuilt transfer case. haven't asked him that either. he said he was fixing it up for himself but it got put on the back burner and he needed something bigger as he has 2 kids. so it was sold in 2016 and I got it in 2018 and he said it had sat up for 2 years. so that would explain that. other than the mileage he seems pretty honest and I hope im not wrong. at 90000 miles, like the odometer showed, it would have been driven 288 miles a month or about 10 miles a day. maybe, but I don't know. to work and back? probably hard to find one with that few actual miles I bet. need to find me a new radiator cap for one and see if that helps. sure seems to drive and run good though. seems if motor was no good it would do worse than it is doing. dang sure hope im right on that. I wonder about the transfer case. but it shifts great too. don't know why the new gaskets. i'll eventually ask him about that. been building a console to the left of the parking brake so I will have a spot to put a coffee cup while im driving. don't like the console at all. im going to watch the rest of the videos roscoe sent. thanks a lot again everyone. I haven't even had a chance to drive it much to check out if it heats up now but I will let ya'll know.

Hello,

Rolled odometer aside, it would be wise to do a coolant flush, re-core the radiator and replace the water pump and thermostat.

Transfer seals tend to leak in old age. Replacing them involves changing gaskets and using sealant. Ask me how I know. It appears the PO took care of this. Good for another 20 years if you are careful.

Juan

hello juan. im sure you are right. I did replace the thermostat and did a coolant flush but haven't replaced the water pump. I was going to get the radiator rodded out but it was like $169-$269 so I just got it pressure washed for $80. guy said it looked pretty clean and it showed no leaks when it was pressured up but I know that's not like really cleaning it. the old thermostat opened when I put it in hot water but maybe it could have been randomly sticking? and chances are the transfer case could have been leaking. I know I did the gasket and seal thing on my old fj40. maybe will get to drive it tomorrow and see what happens. maybe I will get lucky but im kinda doubting it. but strange things happen sometimes. maybe it was only the thermostat.[hope] thanks juan, and thanks gunrunner for the invite to the 70 series meet and greet. kinda doubt I can make it this time but I have a brother in east Tennessee, Johnson city, and it would be a good reason to go. I saw where there were only a few 70 series there. maybe there's not a lot of them around or something? seem like real good trucks. thank ya'll again.

The T/cases are long lasting, but as Juan said with age they can leak a little. Mine will have to be done soon. Its at 290000 but has been leaking slowly for a couple of years.
I really don't think you will have a problem with the engine. 1HZ's are fairly honest, if they start easy and run smoothly straight away, consider them good.
Their weak point is probably the injection pump which doesnt last as long as the engine.

man, that's good to hear roscoe. it does start instantly and runs real smooth. I drove it earlier and pushed it a little for 15-20 miles and it did kinda heat up, little more than halfway on the gauge, but cooled off when I got back down to 100 km an hour. it gets to 120 kph easy. 130 kph takes longer to get to, and 140 kph was kinda hard to get to but easier when I was going down hill. I saw where 120 equals 75 mph, 130 equals 80 mph, and 140 equals 86 mph. when I first take off, it gets up to speed pretty quick, like my fj40. but after 5th gear at speeds over 60 or 65 mph, it takes longer to get it moving faster. I can get to 60 or 65 mph pretty fast but I never drove a diesel so don't know if that's normal or maybe it should be peppier than it is. I hear joe k cruises at 75-85 at times and so it makes me wonder about mine. maybe there is a governor somewhere that some guys remove? I don't know how to adjust one and don't know if I need to for sure. it did get around 19.8 mpg with 33+10.50 tires and joe said because of tire size I probably got better than that which was good news. my fj40 got 12 and that was a main reason for getting a diesel to begin with. and didn't use any oil in 1200 miles when I drove it back from florida. kind of makes me think the motor is ok, just don't know about when you get up to higher speeds. it was only 85 degrees here when I drove it so not too hot and when the guage got to the halfway mark and I slowed down to 60 mph, it cooled down real quick. sorry this is long, just trying to cover what I did with it today. thanks for all ya'lls input and advice.

A good HZ1 motor will run at least for 500/600.000 km with no issues , if properly cared .
So the 145 or 245 k km is not a technical problem in my
It is only a commercial point to clear up with the vendor .
The motor however should NOT heat up under no circumstances.
personally I only reached the red line in 1 occasion running on full gas in3-4 low range , for over 100 km in very soft sand in Africa.
But on road this should not happen.
Pls address this apparent problem ,as cracking the diesel head for over heating is not difficult .
And can be very costly to repair .

Bye Renago
