hi renago. I looked at the link you sent me and I have seen other write-ups on changing the silicone oil. doesn't seem too hard. mainly using some sealant so it doesn't leak back out. I think I may go ahead with a new one and rebuild the old one for a spare. cruiser outfitters had one[not sure if it was the right one though] for $122 which isn't too bad. I guess from what people say on here, it may be good to put in another temp gauge to be on the safe side. maybe I could find a 24V one here in the states and hook it up. elkaholic had a part# for a clutch fan from EU but doesn't know how well it works yet. Beno will be back from SA the 24th and said maybe he could help me out then on a new fan clutch. kinda got an idea that may fix my problem. still, I can drive it now as I don't go very fast anyway but I will get it right before its over with. thanks renago, and you too coldtaco.

Ran it up to 180F and then shut the engine off. The old clutch would let the fan spinn down after the engine shut down. The Hella unit stopped the fan dead. Will be driving it tomorrow and will report back.

Also, VDO sells their Cockpit series gauges in the US in 24V variants

hey sam[hope that's right]- thanks a lot. I will look up some gauges from what you sent me. my oil pressure gauge doesn't work either so I think I will put some gauges where my altimeter and everything is as they don't really work either. what was it in us dollars with shipping for the hella fan? I just looked it up under euros and it was around $91 if im right. that was with shipping I think. is that a good reputable brand, do you know?

Hella is a good brand - West German made clutch. The one I sent you a link to is their premium line.

I can say that all indications from my morning commute to work, that the fan clutch is now working much better. This morning's outside temps were in the 70s and I usually see 190-200F in those temps. I could not get the truck above 180F. When I shut it down at work, I got what I'd call the "cummins squeak" ... engine stopped and the fan fan caused the water pump belt to screech as it slipped a little - a result of the clutch being fairly tight. This afternoon's commute in >90F and high humidity will be the real test ...

This is the seller I bought from I think I was under $75 delivered with quick delivery times.

The Hella one I linked to crosses over from the warm weather (red /orange hub) OEM version.

hey guys. sam, that does sound pretty good. I kind of believe in german and swiss made stuff. thank you too roscoe as I thought red was for hotter climates but wasn't sure. red is definitely the one I need for southern Oklahoma. man, it gets super hot here! if its no trouble let me know how it does on the drive home when its 90. that would be a little like where I live. I had a fan clutch in my fj40 with a 2f and no matter how hot or how cold it always stayed the same. every time. that's kind of what I would expect with one on this hzj73. that's a good price on a fan clutch too. I didn't know hella made stuff like that. thanks again for the advice. sure is a lot of help here for people with problems on their trucks. I doubt a lot of people would make it without it. thanks.

I head home in 40 minutes, currently 92F and 75% humidity ... AC will be on

hi renago- just called Toyota house and they said the only one they could get was #16210-61121 which was for a 4.0L and it was $291. Bryce at cruiser outfitters said there were 2 part #s, 16210-17010 and 16210-17040. he thought the one I needed was 17010. maybe it was the red one and he didn't have it and suggested I talk to Beno and he is in south America till the 24th. which I could wait as im not in a big hurry. it does ok long as I don't floor it or drive a long distance. Bryce wanted $122 which was reasonable to me. don't know why the Toyota dealer here couldn't find it.

great! thank you!
OK, this mornings commute in to work: ambient air 70F, humidity close to 100% - truck ran 180F indicated ... and would not budge off of it.

Drive home: ambient air at 92-94F, humidity at ~75%, a/c wide open. Truck ran 190-195 indicated. IR thermometer on water outlet on engine showed 193 - temp gauge showed ~195. Fan stopped with engine - no spin down.

My commute is 35 miles each way of rolling 2 lane. I tend to run about 100km/hr. Truck has a custom Odd Iron Offroad turbo and air to water intercooler. Uphill stretches I’ll run 850 to 900F Egts and 10-12 psi boost. Today, I was driving like an idiot (not allowing trans to kick down pushing lower rpm and high end - for this truck - egts).

My commute home typically shows higher temps with max temp at the top of one long hill - pre new fan clutch - peaking at 220-225. Today was 195. So far this new fan clutch seems to be helping out significantly.

My next step is to add a larger trans cooler with a dedicated electric fan. Parts are in hand and on the way.

How much is a Toyota OEM clutch ?
Just a matter of couriosity.
Bye Renago
hey again- I looked up the one sam has, the Hella fan clutch, and the crossover part #s are 16210-17070[hdj80], 17010,17020,17040, and 17050. the 17070 was a Toyota red one and crosses over to the hella part# so if it bolts up and works on the hzj73 I would think I would be good to go. its also for hzj71, hzj76, hzj78 and hzj79. also 1hd-fte. haven't heard of a hzj71. but Bryce mentioned the 17010 and 17040 which it crosses to also. seems like german made would be good also. I sent in my vin# to this one place to see what they say. man, didn't think it would be so hard to find a clutch but I guess its worth it. thanks again.

Mike, you are experiencing one of the many joys of owning a truck that Mr. T never sent to the USofA

hey sam- thanks. this turbo language is kinda over my head though but I guess it sounds pretty good. seems like it would work better for me maybe as I have no turbo. but I looked the Hella part# up and it crosses over with several OEM #s. mainly 16210-17070 which showed an hdj80-TD. but also worked with 17010, 17020, 17040, and 17050. 17070 was a Toyota red #.

The turbo adds considerable power ... @Gun Runner 5 will know for sure, but likely 40% more. This will add more heat load on the cooling system.

Hella carries several fan clutches that cross over to the same Toyota numbers. I do not recall where I found it but found specs that clearly indicated this one hasd performance similar to the Toyota red number.

The only aftermarket parts that I found that crosses over directly on a one to one basis is the Aisin Aftermarket model which is the OEM supplier.

@beno will likely slap me for putting a non OE part on the truck but it does work and I can buy two for the price of one OE part. That one delivered from the UK in 3 days

hey sam- thanks. I think I will go with the Hella. if it cooled your turbo it would surely cool mine. and I do trust german made parts. no offense anyone. hopefully they still make parts like they used to. and it did cross over to the Toyota red fan. seems as it was primarily used on the hdj-80 td but also on several more. maybe these folks also stock a radiator cap, as I need one of those too. still kinda guessing on this too and don't want to throw my money away but I did see quite a bit of grease on the front of my old one, and have changed the thermostat, and thinking the pump doesn't leak so it may be ok. I can still drive it if I take it easy and I don't drive one hard anyway. I could sure tell you some stories from my drinking ,river road days and my fj40. :) many, many thanks to all of you. and happy trails also. I sure do like this hzj73!:bounce:
