I do..

Valvoline synthetic is like $4.00 per quart..

oh snap, thats pricey

how many courts you think it take for a ram and a cooler, 4 or 5 quarts? maybe more.

does it help that much? to pay more?

gracias

Would it be better to install the hydro assist with a standard high-steer or the 4x4labs high-steer that runs the tie rod behind the axle?

I have seen too many brake systems that needed complete replacement because the owner mistakenly put PS fluid in the master. Two different pint bottles of clear fluid is a recipe for disaster.

I put ATF in the PS.

I'd like to see a ram on a 4x4labs set up. A ram is high on my to-do list.

got it done for you, let me get a link

I put ATF in the PS..

From what both PSC and POS told me, ATF isn't good because it doesn't control foaming very well, which causes little micro-cavitations on the pump, killing it over time. It's not much of an issue with a std. steering setup, but when you start adding more parts, it gets more important..

Just my $.03

HMMWV's run ATF for power steering fluid. We sometimes have foaming issues, but that is more due to air in the system.
The uparmored ones are pushing 14000 pounds, and in addition to the power steering, the pump runs the hydro boost, the fan, and the rear winch.
The power steering system is basically the same as what we run, with a saginaw pump and box. When sitting still, the power steering doesn't do much with all the weight on the front of it.
I have always wanted to try regular power steering fluid in one to see if it makes a difference.

FYI - According to an old racing buddy that worked at a refinery the only difference between ATF and PS fluid is the red dye and the size of the container. If you want something better than ATF you might try synthetics...

I'm a little confused .. coz I been read several times in the 80 section that 80 series owner manual recomends ATF for PS system .. actually I bleed out the PS fluid and change it for ATF ..

its obvious that there are a couple of different opinions on this.. Two Completely different ones from Very knowledgeable people.. id think that you could run either and it would work.. Im happy with my ATF so far with Saginaw PS..

If it's recommended for your vehicle, then run it.

A Fj80 with 35's is a little different than a 4-wheel steer rig on 47's. When you start adding hydraulic cylinders, it changes things.

Yap I know that .. I plan make a hydro assist ( maybe next year ) for my Tencha ( 60 series ) and just wondering about it .. coz have a complete stock ( right now ) Toyota PS system ...

+1. I mistakenly put power steering fluid in my Subaru which specs ATF and it ate up all the plastic screens and parts in the pump. Some kind of corrosive substance in power steering fluid.
