How-To: TechStream In 5 Minutes (17 Viewers)

The $20 amazon cable worked just fine and you actually get a copy of techstream on the included CD. For those that are not too tech savy (like myself), the reason for the virtual machine is to run TS in 32 bit mode, which is necessary for the cable to work properly. Anything newer than windows XP is 64 bit.
I just bought a $40 64 bit version off eBay. Works great, and no virtual box required.
The drivers for the cheaper listed cable says it only supports XP and 7 however.
Its no doubt possible to get it working in later OSs though, but it could be painful.
If in doubt though, Virtualbox should do the trick.

I packaged everything into a virtual machine image for a few reasons:

- Security: Everyone's essentially running cracked versions of TechStream from an unknown source. There's a non-zero chance of ransomware slipping into one version. Running the software in an isolated virtual machine is a layer of security here.

- Portability: The software only runs on Windows. Using a virtual machine image allows the software to run on virtually any computer.

- Access: The software ships on CDs (sometimes mini-disks). Lots of laptops don't have CD drives, and any 'slot-type' drive won't accept mini-disks.

- Ease: Drivers for the two popular cables are pre-installed with a recent version of TechStream. It's basically just download and run.

That said, if you are running a Windows machine and can follow the instructions included by the seller, there's no reason you *have* to use a virtual machine.

Having issues downloading the one for Mac. it keeps coming up with an error and won't install the program from Virtualbox.... Any help would be appreciate

I can't replicate any issues with the links. Might try it again.

TIS keeps asking me for the key and the key provided seems not working.

The included TechStream works with the provided key. I'd make sure you didn't install another version of TIS.

the pre-installed one doesn't work, doesn't even open the app

Thank you. Is anyone successfully using an App for their IPhone/IPad. I see there are several Apps with decent reviews. Of course I also need a wireless adapter to plug into the car. There seems to be ones that are WiFi and some Bluetooth adapters. Hope this is ok to ask here.

Uploading a new version that should fix that issue. Will update the OP with a v2 link when uploading is complete. The key only works with the pre-installed version.

@getco thanks for everything so far. I’ve ordered the Amazon cable and we’ll see what happens.

I was initially able to download the Virtual Box and the TechStream image and everything looked good until I tried to launch the TS application, then nothing happened (issue was already posted). Then I deleted both the VB and downloaded TS image and started over and now I’m getting a “failed to import appliance” error.

I wasn’t sure if you had updated the link with the v.2 TS image. Hoping that will fix the software side.

@getco, thank you so much:) Even a computer idiot like now has a chance to start using TS.:D My first job will be to try and measure my AHC pressure after I get the cable from Amazon or ebay.

Subscribed. Thanks for the info!

hey guys... Unfortunately in this case I have all apple products (IPAD, IPHONE, MacBook air.) Does anyone know of a version that I can use with Apple products? I would love to get tech stream going so I can save a little money by diagnosing some of the easier stuff myself. Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks

Ok, I have the Virtual Box XP running. Software loaded but it keeps asking for a key but it doesn't accept it.
So I guess I am stuck on step #2 Replace the Menu.exe can any one talk me through that step? I can't just hit it with a BFH so I'm out of ideas...

I have installed this several times and I keep getting a

"Critical Update" Software is out of date as of Sep 12th 2016
You must update and every option is greyed out except update.

Any thoughts?

@getco thank you for this. Not sure if this is Mac related, but everything seems to work great until I go to launch TechStream - at this point, nothing happens. Do you have any suggestions, I'm not really sure where the error is. Thanks again.

Any updates on this? I like the idea of a virtual machine, but I keep getting asked for a product key. When I put the supplied key in, it asks for it again as if its not a valid code.

I was able to get TechStream to finally load after it was suggested to reinstall but now I can't seem to get my cable to show up. There might be a couple of reason for this that I'll need to explore more.

The one I bought on Ebay came with a mini-cd with the driver and the software.
I'd check device manager and see if it has installed correctly, and if not, right click, then uninstall it, but keep the driver if prompted, then reboot, and then let it reinstall automatically, hopefully.
If it still fails to work after that, uninstall it, as above, but tick the box to uninstall the driver as well. Then, once that is complete, unplug it, reboot, then, reinstall using the CD, if you have it, or from the internet otherwise, then, when finished, or when prompted, insert the device.
