Just saying the Land Cruiser V8 will run on just about anything. Premium is definitely not required.
Agreed. And for someone with a stock vehicle the behavior I’ve experience may not occur. And even when it does the truck still drives ok, but it’ll often downshift a gear to hold speed even on flat land when the engine is backing off timing, whereas I’ve had that much less often if ever when running 93.
 
I use 91 every fill because it’s only 20 cents more than 88 here
 
The engine sure doesn't need the added octane nor is even programmed to be able to take advantage of it. That said I do use 93 octane Super from Exxon, Mobil , Shell or Chevron about once every 10 tanks. These companies have invested a lot into cleaning additives and they do boost the premium grade, although its probably just as good and cheaper to us a can of Chevron's Techron once in a while. Yes these major manufacturers are "Top Tier" rated which the general non-brand gasoline industry settled on to show the auto manufacture alliance that they to use additives above the EPA regulated detergent minimums.
It is programmed to take advantage of higher octane. Look up Knock Feedback and Knock Correction Learned Value. Those two PIDs can advance or retard timing in real time to accommodate changes in octane.
 
I occasionally put 93 in my LX, but typically use 87.

Yesterday at Shell, 93 octane was $1.02 more than 87. If the price difference was closer, I might consider 93 more often.

None coming your way anytime soon. I read Valero is shutting down one of their CA refineries. That’s going to have upward pricing pressure for sure.

highest i ever paid was $7.50 for 87 in ca

in many se asian countries converting cars to CNG is the norm. LC owners never do

thats how i feel in ca. petrol can be $30 a gal. We will have land cruisers

the sense of elitism i feel as i burn $6 gas amongst all the fuel sipping environmentalists on the 405 is truly orgasmic and is the same elitism i feel when i spit on Prado owners as I look down on them

91 non-ethanol almost exclusively.. Except if I'm caught out of town and can't find decent fuel..

I watched that yesterday. My question is, how do we know a station like BP is actually LAC(the lowest limit) and not just choosing to not get the TopTier stamp of approval. I assume there is money involved in getting that approval ?

Kinda like a tire company choosing to not put the three peak mountain snowflake symbol on their tire even if it could pass.

All that said, I do try to stick to name brand gas. Chevron, Exxon, Mobil. But it can be tough in remote locations. I have tried Sinclair a few times and it always seems to be pretty bad. Thats what gave me those really bad KCLV numbers the other day. and a couple times I put Sinclair in my F150 Ecoboost it performed extremely poor. And I don’t just mean by the knock numbers, it performed noticably crappier according to the butt dyno. Same with Maverick.

Good question. Maybe “top tier” customer service could give an idea what’s involved? Probably not easily answered without a corporate email/title from a gasoline distributor or purveyor. You’re likely on the nose on it costing money to get the sticker on the pumps.

Maybe similar to the “dexos” label that oil companies pay (or not) for - even if they exceed the standards set by GM.
 
Rarely, if ever. In Dallas our low octane level is 87. I run it day in and day out.
 
Never. We live at altitude.
