Looking to buy a 1985 FJ60 with 80K miles. How much should it cost to upgrade the 4 speed transmission to a 5 speed? I will be putting ALOT of highway miles on this truck.

Thanks!

You can buy a new H55 for maybe 2500 or less. May be able to buy used for a little less.

Then you need to install it. Pretty plug n play for an 85 I think. But still, if you’re not doing it yourself, another 2k to 2.5k for professional installation.

Mileage may vary, but this is s good ball park.

Wait... an 85 with 80k miles? Come on man. I wanna see pics or I’m calling BS on that.

If you found an 85 with 80k miles and it’s rust free. Buy it, refresh it. Sell it, and then find one with 200k+ miles on it and put all the additional miles you want on it.

Mfg 4/85 or later, fairly easy and straight forward. Earlier, doable, but more time and parts and mo' money. $2100 I think from some MUD discount vendors. Don't count on getting much money from the 4-spd if you're thinking to sell it and recoup a few dollars. I tried to give two away for free and no takers.

Check the VIN tag for Mfg date.

Might have luck with the 40 crowd if it is actually on 80k miles. And not leaking from every orifice and seal.

I purchased my h55f from cruiser brothers. His price on the transmission is fair market.

I got the trans, rebuilt split case and rear main seal from them.

I purchased an aisin clutch from rockauto, and a new oil pan and transmount from partsouq.

My truck had 300,000 miles on it at the time. You probably just need the transmission, rear main, transmount and maybe the oil pan gasket at that low of a mileage.

We did the swap in a day.

If my memory serves me the shift stick is different. Your old 4 speed shift stick won't work so there's that to add. Few bucks for a nipple. If you have oil leaking at the bell housing you prob should do the rear main seal while you have the transmission out. Also as Hemi mentions above get the oil pan gasket and go at it by removing the oil pan, dropping the rear crankshaft bearings and cap. Don't drop the bearings! This way you can "place" the rear main seal instead of trying to tap it in and tearing the inner lip.

And you will want to get the retro 5 speed shifter ball from racer city, but that can wait.

I forgot about that shifter handler knob. I got lucky and found the shifter for $70 on amazon.

10,000 miles since I put mine in and I couldn’t imagine life without it.

I sold my 4 speed and got $600 before my diesel swap.

H55's can be bought new through any dealership. I bought mine thru a discount online dealer. Toyota of El Cahon ..but it was toyota parts direct or something similar at the time. Even with shipping it was close to 1000.00 cheaper than a local dealer. Pays to shop around. I'd budget 3K for parts. Prob going to cost another 2k for labor.

have a look at my H55 swap thread - there's a link to my google spreadsheet that i used to keep track of all the parts I would need to collect before starting the project. feel free to download a copy into your own google sheet and start your own project tracking...helps keep track of everything and gives you a nice summary when you're all done.

a lot of my data wont be relevant to your FJ60 - i was swapping out the A440 automatic for a 5 speed...so I needed everything.

my sheet has part numbers for things you're gonna need.

transmission is readily available from any toyota dealer.
you dont need a shift lever
you might want a 5 speed shift knob.
you have bell housing/clutch fork, etc...so you're lucky there...dont need a master cyl/slave cyl (but you could argue it's as good a time as any to refresh it...you'll never do it again

you'll want to replace the clutch/pressure plate / t/o bearing etc...... there's a link on my sheet to the best price you'll find for a clutch replacement kit.

what else?

your rear drive line might need to be shortened a bit...cuz the 5 speed is a bit longer so the rear drive line gets shortened. (unless your 4 speed has the spacer at the back and then length might be end up same)

you have a flywheel...but you'll have yours resurfaced - $40.00
rear main seal since you're there.

moving the transfer case from the 4 speed to the 5 speed - you might as well do the t-case rebuild since it's opened up for the swap no matter what. at minimum you're gonna need a gasket set since you're tearing down the t-case just to disconnect it from the 4 speed. the rebuild kit makes sense. and there's a beefier upgraded input gear that mates the transmission to the t-case and provides a much larger surface area of splines to interact when you engage 4wheel drive...
36212-Mod32Modified TC Input Gear – 19 spline mainshaft1$229.00
not required...but a good idea "since you're there"

i doubt you'll find the 5 speed any cheaper than the $2,482.00 that I paid...unless you find a used one.

i'd guess you wont get it done all in for less than 3000. assuming you do all the labor yourself...and farm out only the things you cant do (drive line and flywheel)
