How do I reset my monitors to pass smog?

I said the same exact thing to the local smog shop but they said those were systems that should have a monitor. Both shops I went to said the same thing.

Makes sense now that I see your scan tool. They're full of crap. Those systems are NOT on our trucks. These are the ones I have on my '96 according to the Torque app. I was having issues with the Catalyst monitor. You should be good to go.

Yep, I agree with the "Not Applicable/Not Avail" crowd. We don't have those TMK.

It passed!!! Apparently the other two smog places were full of crap. Makes sense. They both wanted to be paid every time they failed me then also wanted an "inspection" fee for trouble shooting the problem. It's now behind me and I can finally go get this 80 registered. For the future, it's good to know that an "NA" reading isn't a problem. I wonder if a lot of smog places will pull that crap and try to get the customer to think there is an issue. It probably never would have happened it I hadn't walked into each shop with a code reader plugged in with really stupid questions coming from my end.

also might have something to do with smog shops not really liking to smog these things...... The calibration of the smog equipment takes 45 mins alone on trucks these old - or so I'm told..... they could have just been trying to get you to go somewhere else?
Who knows.....

Well congrats on getting smog in the Socialist Republic of California!

if you plug in a basic obd2 code reader will it show the "ready" status? I have a cheapo obd2 reader that shows only the fault code when the code light is lit. I just failed smog due to the monitors not being "ready". The batteries recently died and I recharged them and was told I need to drive about 40 miles.

The one I am using which is also shown in earlier pics is that POS one from Harbor Freight for 50 bucks. Been using it for years. It shows me which systems are running and which are not. Doesn't give a lot of info but it gives enough.

thx for that, going to go get one of these today, dealing with this now, so if it says "N/A" it means "not applicable" and this ready check is not used in our trucks, correct? I want to go into the smog place being informed this time. Last time I checked he said many of the monitors were not ready.

"NA" means not available. It's a system the vehicle does not have and should not affect smog. it's a system that will never reset because there is nothing there to reset. Wish I knew that fact going in but I at least know it now.

Even the cheapo code readers will typically have indicators at the top of the screen for monitors. You will see little circles with abbreviations like, "EVP", "CAT", "O2S", etc. If the indicator is blinking, the monitor is incomplete. Solid means it has completed, and you need to check for DTCs to see if it passed or failed.

Not sure what reader you have but a scangauge will indicate if it is ready or not.

I had to drive over a hundred miles one time to get the monitors ready, and that was trying to follow the reset procedure. It's difficult to do some of those steps when there's traffic everywhere!

Good luck!
