How do I chase threads or retap front seat bolt (1 Viewer)

Hey guys I removed my front passenger seat to vacuum and verify the seat is solid. I found one bolt all brown as if some kind of rust? Maybe coffee? Pictures below.

I hand sanded down and cleaned up everything but the bolt and the hole threads are stripped. I searched here and found the bolt size M10x1.25 which I assume is correct. I will be ordering new bolts from Lexus/Toyota.

I don't know how to retap or chase the threads and what to buy and the correct sizes.

No need to spend $$ on an OEM bolt, you can get an m10x1.25 at a hardware store. If you chase the threads and can't get a new bolt to bite, you may need to drill out and thread up one size.

Thanks for the link thats what i was trying to figure out thanks so much.
I've looked and some say right hand thread and left hand thread what does that mean? Which direction should i turn the tool to cut the new threads?
 
You want a right hand, then turn to the right! (clockwise). squirt some lube onto the tap first, if you have a tap handle that's best but if not you can slide it into a small socket and turn that, can also just put the tap in vice grips but that can be sketchy getting it started if you don't have a lot of practice. I made a video for repairing broken bolts a little while back, most of it wouldn't apply as you don't have a broken bolt to drill out but if you want to gain a little confidence in seeing something get drilled/tapped maybe it's useful to you, here:

Yes, thank you so much for the clarification . I'm definitely missing the confidence. Although it seems straight forward I feel like seat bolts are a pretty major thing I want to make sure its done right with no doubts.

Those threads look good to me. Try to torque it down to spec. If it yields before reaching torque spec, then I'd run a helicoil or timesert.
 
You've got plenty of thread there. I'd oil up a tap (don't try to chase those threads) run it down and then install a new bolt. Bet it will tighten up just fine. Use a tapered tap (not a bottoming tap) as it will be easier to get it 'started'.

The tap is the amazon link above right?
What does it mean to chase threads?

Bolt doesn't thread in without force i don't want to jam it in there. Plan is to use the tap linked above to cut/clean the threads so the new bolt goes in smoothly. If this doesn't work ill look into helicoil.
 
You should replace bolts with the same grade. Best to pull a couple with same markings and length somewhere off a Toyota at the wreckers. They often have bins you can fish around and match one up. Threads look OK, just apply some Nickel based thread lube on the bolt and runit in and out a few time, then torque to spec on the final ass'y. My $.02... Serious about matching steel grade though for that app. Guessing it's 8.8 or so... Any garage guy will have some lying around.

HINT#1: a self-tapping bolt can be used in place of a tap if it does need to be tapped.

HINT#2: a bolt will pull apart before the threads fail as long as the length of effective threaded length of the hole is equal or greater than the diameter of the bolt.

Below are the markings for a Metric Gr 8.8 automotive bolt, on the right a self tapping bolt with bottom threads tapered and sidecut to cleanup existing threads...

Yes, you could use the tap posted above...or any like it.

'Chasing' a thread is done using a less aggressive Chasing Tap which is designed to 'reform' and clean up existing threads. But in your case I'm not certain the root of your threads are clean and undamaged enough to simply 'chase' them. Hence my recommendation to run a regular tap down it. A thread cutting tap has the ability to 'cut' new threads where necessary while at the same time reforming those that might have been pulled a little. Use a lubricant on the tap and when/if it starts to bind...back it up a little to clear any chips and then proceed.
